  • A global analysis of multifaceted urbanization patterns using Earth Observation data from 1975 to 2015

Open Access•Yunyu Tian, Nandin‐Erdene Tsendbazar et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2022

Urbanization as a global phenomenon is a multifaceted process. Here we do the first global attempt to characterize the complexity of urbanization from 1975 to 2015 in terms of population, built-up structure, and greenness per 5 × 5 km2 grid covering global inhabited areas, using Earth Observation data sources. Our results emphasize the multifaceted nature of urbanization that varies greatly across regions and times, in addition to the steady expa…

  • Mapping urban–rural differences in the worldwide achievement of sustainable development goals

    Open Access•Yunyu Tian, Nandin‐Erdene Tsendbazar et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Land use efficiency (LUE), energy efficiency (EE), and air quality are key indicators when assessing urban-related Sustainable Development Goals, yet recent trends and trade-offs in and around urban areas worldwide remain largely unknown. We use an Earth Observation approach to map the land-energy-air sustainability nexus and highlight distinct urban–rural gradients worldwide (2000–2015). In the Global South, urban areas perform relatively better…

  • Forest disturbance alerts for the Congo Basin using Sentinel-1

Open Access•Johannes Reiche, Adugna Mullissa et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

A humid tropical forest disturbance alert using Sentinel-1 radar data is presented for the Congo Basin. Radar satellite signals can penetrate through clouds, allowing Sentinel-1 to provide gap-free observations for the tropics consistently every 6–12 days at 10 m spatial scale. In the densely cloud covered Congo Basin, this represents a major advantage for the rapid detection of small-scale forest disturbances such as subsistence agriculture and …

  • Copernicus Global Land Cover Layers—Collection 2

Open Access•Marcel Buchhorn, Myroslava Lesiv et al.•ARTICLE•Remote Sensing•2020

In May 2019, Collection 2 of the Copernicus Global Land Cover layers was released. Next to a global discrete land cover map at 100 m resolution, a set of cover fraction layers is provided depicting the percentual cover of the main land cover types in a pixel. This additional continuous classification scheme represents areas of heterogeneous land cover better than the standard discrete classification scheme. Overall, 20 layers are provided which a…

  • Addressing the need for improved land cover map products for policy support

    Open Access•Zoltan Szantoi, Gary N Geller et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2020•Cited by: 1

The continued increase of anthropogenic pressure on the Earth's ecosystems is degrading the natural environment and then decreasing the services it provides to humans. The type, quantity, and quality of many of those services are directly connected to land cover, yet competing demands for land continue to drive rapid land cover change, affecting ecosystem services. Accurate and updated land cover information is thus more important than ever, howe…

  • The Environmental Impact of not Having Paved Roads in Arid Regions

    Open Access•S S Keshkamat, N-E Tsendbazar et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 13
