  • Dendrochronology of the Seaside Juniper (Juniperus maritima), Washington State, USA

    Dustin Gleaves, Aquila Flower•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2025

Seaside juniper (Juniperus maritima) is a recently identified cryptic, rare tree species endemic to the Salish Sea region. This study reports on the first dendrochronological investigation of the species. We sought to determine if seaside junipers are capable of crossdating and to identify correlations between instrumental climate records and radial growth. We collected tree core samples from seaside juniper in five sites throughout the San Juan …

  • Urban seas as hotspots of stress in the Anthropocene ocean

    Open Access•Kathryn L Sobocinski, C Drew Harvell et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2022

Coastal seas and estuaries are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth and have long attracted human activity. Yet, urbanization pressures are intense and are compounded by accelerating climate stresses. Urban seas are now hotspots of stress in the Anthropocene ocean. The Salish Sea stands out as one of a few highly functioning urban seas in the world, boasting ecological riches and thriving coastal communities and industries, including tou…
