Enablers and obstacles for implementing rewilding pathways in socio-ecological systems
Rewilding gained attention as a transformative approach to restoring biodiversity and ecosystem functions in Europe’s multifunctional landscapes. Yet, its implementation in socio-ecological systems (SES) raises critical questions about the alignment of ecological goals with social values, cultural contexts, and economic realities. This article discusses enablers and obstacles for rewilding in human-shaped landscapes, drawing on a holistic, transd…
Towards a holistic approach to rewilding in cultural landscapes
In recent years, rewilding has been attracting growing attention as novel, process‐oriented concept supporting ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation. Rewilding aims to strengthen the adaptive capacity of ecosystems by restoring natural processes and withdrawing anthropogenic interventions. Yet, diverging understandings, conceptions and definitions of rewilding result in a somewhat fuzzy concept. So far, the scientific discussion foc…
Land take in environmental assessments
In this paper, we present results from an in-depth questionnaire survey, in which experts from ten EU Member States and the UK assessed the progress towards the EU’s ‘no net land take by 2050’ target within their countries. The survey focused in particular on how Directive 2014/52/EU has been implemented at national level. The revised directive stipulates for the first time explicitly that Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) should consider ‘…
Combining biophysical optimization with economic preference analysis for agricultural land-use allocation

Implementing Nature-Based Solutions in Urban Areas
Fostering nature-based solutions in urban areas is an issue that receives increasing attention on the political agenda. But in many cases, only insufficient financial resources are available for the implementation of such solutions. A central issue in this context is the structure of municipal revenues, which stem from either municipal tax revenue, fees for municipal services, or fiscal transfers from other governmental levels. Many of these reve…
