Increased population exposure to extreme droughts in Iberia due to 0.5 °C additional anthropogenic warming
This study investigates the effects of incremental global warming, specifically the transition from 1.5 °C to 2.0 °C, on drought conditions in the Iberian Peninsula (IP). Our findings confirm a substantial increase in the frequency and intensity of droughts in the IP due to anthropogenic climate change. We highlight the importance of temperature in drought representation and underscore the urgent need to limit global warming below 1.5 °C, in line…
Interactions between hot and dry fuel conditions and vegetation dynamics in the 2017 fire season in Portugal
Wildfires are a serious threat to ecosystems and human. In Portugal, during 2017, a catastrophic fire season burned more than 500 000 hectares and caused the death of more than 100 people. Previous studies have shown that hot and dry fuel conditions promoted widespread propagation of wildfires. However, burned area (BA) and mega-fires, such as the 2017 ones, depend not just on favourable meteorological conditions, but also on fuel accumulation an…
Influence of high-latitude warming and land-use changes in the early 20th century northern Eurasian CO 2 sink
While the global carbon budget (GCB) is relatively well constrained over the last decades of the 20th century [1], observations and reconstructions of atmospheric CO2 growth rate present large discrepancies during the earlier periods [2]. The large uncertainty in GCB has been attributed to the land biosphere, although it is not clear whether the gaps between observations and reconstructions are mainly because land-surface models (LSMs) underestim…
The synergy between drought and extremely hot summers in the Mediterranean
In the last years a large number of weather driven extreme events has occurred worldwide with unprecedented socio-economic impacts and are expected to increase, in both frequency and intensity, under future global-warming conditions. In this context early identification and predictability of such events are paramount as they mostly affect several socio-economic activities. Despite the effort in monitoring and evaluation of these extreme events, a…
Response of vegetation to drought time-scales across global land biomes
We evaluated the response of the Earth land biomes to drought by correlating a drought index with three global indicators of vegetation activity and growth: vegetation indices from satellite imagery, tree-ring growth series, and Aboveground Net Primary Production (ANPP) records. Arid and humid biomes are both affected by drought, and we suggest that the persistence of the water deficit (i.e., the drought time-scale) could be playing a key role in…
