Drivers of street tree diversity in the Canadian prairies
In the Canadian prairies, street tree populations remain dominated by elm ( Ulmus ) and ash ( Fraxinus ), two genera tolerant of the cold, semiarid prairie climate where native species are few. This narrow species base leaves prairie urban forests especially vulnerable to pest outbreaks, yet research examining constraints to diversification has mostly focused on warmer regions. To determine if similar constraints apply in the prairies, we conduct…
Using the Gini Index to quantify urban green inequality
Historical drivers of street tree species selection
We examined archival documents on street trees from five Canadian cities. • Desirable species were limited by their natural and nursery availability. • Aesthetics have evolved from large tree-lined streets to ornamental species. • Species-specific ecosystem disservices resulted in the shift from poplar to elm and ash. • Conflict with utilities contributed to the use of ornamental species over elm and ash. There is a long history of planting trees…
Arboricultural codes of ethics lack protection for trees, wildlife, and biodiversity
Conservation and environmental protection are important to many arborists and urban foresters. • Arboricultural professional associations have codes of ethics that regulate professional members. • Environmental themes are underrepresented in existing codes of ethics. • Adherence to laws is addressed generally, rather than adherence to specific environmental laws. • Professional associations may be limited in their ability to respond to unethical …
History, engagement, and visibility of Indigenous Peoples in urban forest management plans from Canada and the United States
Environmental justice in urban forestry is concerned with recognizing and centering the needs of under-engaged communities in planning and decision-making processes. To examine the engagement and visibility of Indigenous Peoples in urban forestry, this study reviewed 181 urban forest management plans (UFMPs) from Canada and the United States. Themes pertaining to Indigenous Peoples were found in only 16 Canadian (22 %) and 27 US (25 %) UFMPs. The…

The impacts and legacies of warfare on forest ecosystems
How should platforms be archived? On sustainable use practices of a Telegram Archive to study Russia’s war against Ukraine
After Russia’s war against Ukraine destroyed people’s ability to move and communicate freely in Ukraine, many Ukrainians turned to social media and messenger apps, especially Telegram, to produce and share information. The vast amount of this digital data is privatized, ephemeral, and difficult to utilize for research, raising urgent questions about its sustainable accessibility and usability. In this article, we explore a specific aspect of digi…
Factors influencing the use of introduced black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) for slope stabilization in post-war South Korea
Following Japanese Imperial occupation of Korea and the Korean War, South Korea's forests faced substantial decline due to bombing and shelling, illegal logging, and overharvesting of trees and non-timer forest products. Around rural communities, fuel scarcity over the course of 20th Century conflict caused fuel deprivation. Reforestation attempts following the Korean War saw the use of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), an introduced species n…
Hutterite colonies and canopy cover
Located across the extent of the Canadian Prairies, the Hutterisch-speaking Hutterites are comprised of four groups or kinships: the Lehrerleut, Dariusleut, Schmiedeleut-1, and Schmiedeleut-2. Previous limited case studies have highlighted how the use of trees across the landscaped communities, including for aesthetic and agroforestry objectives, differs between the four kinships. Using photo-interpretive analysis of stratified samples using remo…
Potential impacts of the invasive Agrilus planipennis on various demographics in Winnipeg, Canada
The hardiness of Fraxinus spp. (ash) makes them a common municipal tree in adverse growing conditions. In Winnipeg, Manitoba, the impacts of Dutch elm disease resulted in increased reliance on Fraxinus, resulting in a monoculture of Fraxinus across the city. Emerald ash borer (EAB) (Agrilus planipennis) poses substantial risk to Winnipeg's urban forest, forecasted to result in the total loss of Fraxinus in Winnipeg. With a lens of distributional …
Social media community groups support proactive mitigation of human-carnivore conflict in the wildland-urban interface
Understanding human reactions to potentially dangerous wildlife at the wildland-urban interface is central to mitigating human-wildlife conflicts. Social media is increasingly used to share information about wildlife among residents living in the interface. We used an online survey distributed on community Facebook groups in Victoria Beach, Manitoba — an area experiencing increasing wildlife sightings — to examine whether posts to the groups resu…
