  • Adapting participatory processes in temporary rivers management

    Open Access•María Soria, Núria Bonada et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) mandates to incorporate the participation of stakeholders and the general public in the development and updating of the river basin management plans. So far, the WFD implementation has been mainly focused on perennial rivers without considering temporary rivers properly, neither in biomonitoring programs nor participatory processes. This paper aims at adapting participatory processes in river basin man…

  • The Hydrology of Mediterranean Mountain Areas

    Open Access•Jérôme Latron, Pilar Llorens et al.•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2009•References: 95

The study of the hydrology of Mediterranean mountain areas is especially important, as Mediterranean regions are characterized by unevenly distributed water resources that mainly depend on runoff generated in mountain areas. The objective of this article is to review some characteristic features of the hydrology of Mediterranean mountain areas, mainly based on results from small research catchments (less than 10 km2) mostly in Europe and in the U…

  • Forests and Their Hydrological Effects in Mediterranean Mountains

    Open Access•María Pilar Serrano-Muela, Noemí Lana‐renault et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2008

This article considers the effects of forests on the hydrology of a Mediterranean mountain area. Variations of climate factors, discharge, interception, and water table depth in the San Salvador forested experimental catchment in the Central Spanish Pyrenees were studied and the results compared with those from two deforested catchments. The hydrological response of the San Salvador catchment had the following properties: 1) it had both smaller p…

  • Land Use and Land Cover Change After Agricultural Abandonment

Open Access•Rafael Poyatos, Jérôme Latron et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2003

Land cover mapping obtained from photointerpretation of aerial photographs and orthophotographs was used to quantify land cover changes between 1957 and 1996 in a Mediterranean middle mountain area. Expansion of forested area is clearly the main land cover change caused by the abandonment of traditional agricultural activities and by the use of other materials and energy sources instead of forest resources. As a result, about 64% of the area was …
