  • Changing Security Dynamics in East Asia

    Elena Atanassova‐corneli, Elena Atanassova-Cornelis et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Southeast Asia•2015

There is a significant uncertainty around US security commitment to East Asia over the next 15-20 years, underpinned by China's economic and military rise. This new collection investigates how and whether this affects the present-day strategic perceptions and behaviour of East Asian nations, and of the US itself. By exploring how regional actors deal with uncertainties that are inherent to the current geopolitical situation in East Asia, the cont…

  • An Overseas Naval Presence without Overseas Bases

    Open Access•Susanne Kamerling, Frans‐Paul van der Putten•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Chinese Affairs•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This article aims to assess how China is using its navy to secure its interests in the Gulf of Aden, and what this means for the European Union. The analysis of how China's naval presence in the Gulf of Aden has evolved since early 2009 suggests that China's increasing interests and involvement in Africa do not necessarily lead to the establishment of Chinese naval bases in or close to the continent. To supply its ships, the Chinese navy may well…

  • The Red-Haired Barbarian from Leiden. An Interview with Leonard Blussé

Open Access•Carolien Stolte, Alicia Schrikker et al.•ARTICLE•Itinerario•2011

You have reached the mandatory retirement age of 65 and gave your farewell lecture on 6 June last. High time to have an interview with you! After Itinerario was founded by George Winius and you in 1976, you yourself did many of the interviews. Interviews were and still are rather uncommon in scholarly journals. Why did you start them? It was a mixture of egoism and curiosity. We meant the journal to be a research journal, so apart from publishing…

  • Asean and Strategic Rivalry among the Great Powers in Asia

Open Access•Fenna Egberink, Frans-Paul van der Putten et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Southeast…•2010•References: 5

This paper looks at ASEAN's role in the context of the three main bilateral relations among the great powers in Asia: China-US, China-Japan, and China-India. The authors argue that although ASEAN's influence is limited in terms of geographical reach and its impact on actual security issues, Southeast Asia is potentially an important object of great power rivalry and thus the sub-region is highly relevant to Asian geopolitics. The key question wit…

Today Philips is one of the largest foreign investors in East Asia. The foundation for the company's East Asian position was laid by investment in Taiwan in the 1960s and early 1970s, at a time when this country and the rest of the region were still largely ignored by other European investors. This article investigates the motives for Philips to play a pioneering role among European firms in large-scale investing in Taiwan. The author uses the tr…

    Open Access•Frans-Paul van der Putten, Frans‐Paul van der Putten•ARTICLE•Itinerario•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Ever since its publication in 1966, Tussen Neutraliteit en Imperialisme (‘Between Neutrality and Imperialism’) has been the standard work on Dutch policy towards China between 1863 and 1901. In this study the author, F. van Dongen, stresses the adherence to neutrality towards the strong European neighbour states as the fundamental guideline for Dutch foreign policy, not only within Europe but also in the Far East. This policy stemmed from the fac…
