  • Transnational everyday life in the twin-city of Tornio-Haparanda

    Helena Ruotsala•ARTICLE•Acta Ethnographica Hungarica•2012•References: 1

This article concentrates on everyday life in the twin-city of Tornio-Haparanda, which is situated in the cross-border region of the Tornio River Valley between Finland and Sweden. The Tornio River Valley was divided after the Finnish War of 1809 and, until then, people spoke the same language and shared the same culture and religion. Today, the Tornio River Valley area is a frontier district where the political — or national — boundaries do not …

  • Religious landscape in the cross-border region of Tornio River Valley

    Helena Ruotsala•ARTICLE•Acta Ethnographica Hungarica•2011

The aim of my paper is to discuss the cross-border region of the Tornio River Valley between Finland and Sweden as a religious landscape. The present state border between the two countries was defined in1809, at a time when the border was not between Finland and Sweden, but between Sweden and Russia, and it dramatically severed the Finnish-speaking area in the river valley. First I will discuss the shared religious heritage in this area, the Laes…

This article concentrates on one particular local cross-border activity carried on after the Second World War. This was a type of smuggling called joppaus in the local dialect, a practice which was enabled by the post-war economic recession and the scarcity of goods from which Finland suffered. This form of unauthorised economy is said to have been responsible for the rapid revival of the region and its inhabitants after the destruction inflicted…

  • Gendered Rural Spaces

    Open Access•Pia Olsson, Helena Ruotsala•BOOK•Gendered Rural Spaces•2009•References: 7

While Pia Olsson's questionnaire material depicts a quite stable and unchanging rural society, at least on the surface, Katariina Heikkilä's article gives a fairly different picture of Finnish gendered space.Rural areas, especially those connected with agriculture, have encountered big structural changes in recent years in Finland, and the process is continuing. The number of farms in the countryside has fallen by 28 per cent since 1995 and member…
