Temporal Attunements of Care: Scrutinising Counselling Practices in the Context of Prenatal Testing and Abortion
This article focuses on decision‐making in the context of counselling practices around prenatal testing and disability‐selective abortion in Austria and Germany. Starting from the conceptualisation of prenatal care as part of a risk‐oriented anticipatory regime of reproduction, we show that there is an eminently temporal dimension to prenatal care that has received little scholarly attention to date. We centre on this dimension of care, asking ho…
Not-Quite-Dead: Ontological Careographies and the Ambiguous Fetal Body in the Context of Disability-Selective Pregnancy Termination in Austria
Starting from the unsettling ambiguity of the aborted but not-quite-dead fetus, I scrutinize how clinical staff interpret, decide on, and grapple with fetal life signs following disability-selective pregnancy terminations in Austria. Understanding their practices as attempts to provide certainty in a context of ontological and moral uncertainty, I conceptualize them as acts of care that contribute to an intricate "ontological careography" and fac…

Aligning the Affective Body: Commercial Surrogacy in Moscow and the Emotional Labour of Nastraivatsya
Drawing on the concepts of «emotional labour» (Hochschild) and «technologies of the self» (Foucault), this article explores how women align their affective and thus risky bodies in order to become effective surrogate workers in Moscow. I argue that this alignment entails «dis-emotionalising» the pregnancy by strategically essentialising the female body. This essentialisation also serves as an authoritative tool of control and conceals the power d…
The Ultimate Argument
This article explores how the notion of happiness is employed in order to obscure the moral ambiguity and intimate uncertainties of commercial surrogacy. My ethnographic data elucidate the ways in which surrogacy agents and other intermediaries operating in Russia and Ukraine evoke happiness. I discuss three forms of their affective labour: a discourse of fear and hope, the attempt to make surrogacy a joyous and happy process and the claim that t…
