An evaluation study of direct economic losses from surgical site infections in adults
Introduction: Surgical site infection (SSI) represents a significant postoperative complication, resulting in extended hospital stays and substantial economic burdens. Previous research on the direct economic impact of SSIs using recursive systems modeling is limited. This study aims to quantify the direct economic losses attributable to SSIs and to dissect the various factors to these losses. Methods: A retrospective 1:1 matched case-control stu…
Association between ambient temperature and increased total length of hospital stay of patients with cardiopulmonary disease in Hong Kong
Background: While temperature extremes have been shown to be associated with an increased risk of hospital admissions, evidence of their impact on the length of hospital stay, which may capture the lingering effects of temperature extremes, is scarce. Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the association between daily variation in ambient temperature and daily variation in daily total length of stay (daily TLOS), a composite measure encompassing the d…
Evaluation of pharmacist-led medication reconciliation at county hospitals in China
Background: Due to a lack of related research, we aimed to determine the effectiveness of a pharmacist-led medication reconciliation intervention in China. Methods: We conducted a multicentre, prospective, open-label, assessor-blinded, cluster, nonrandomised controlled study at six county-level hospitals, with hospital wards serving as the clusters. We included patients discharged from the sampled hospitals who were aged ≥60 years; had ≥1 studied…
Long term variation of microphysical properties of black carbon in Beijing derived from observation and machine learning
The microphysical attributes of black carbon (BC) can determine its absorption and hygroscopic properties. However, long-term information is difficult to obtain from the field. In this study, the BC properties including mass concentration, the coating volume ratio (VR) relative to the refractory BC (rBC), the rBC diameter and the fraction of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), are derived from a number of field experiments using a random forest mode…
I see you. Do you see me? Investigating the representation of diversity in prize winning Australian early childhood picture books
Opening up semiotic spaces for gender expression
This article examines the visual and verbal expressions of gender in Australian award-winning early childhood picture books. It brings together social semiotic analysis and the narratological concepts of narration and focalization to examine the extent to which one community of practice (authors, illustrators, publishers and awards council) reproduces symbolic manifestations of gender, or offers readers space to engage with alternatives. The auth…
Enhanced heating rate of black carbon above the planetary boundary layer over megacities in summertime
The fast development of a secondary aerosol layer was observed over megacities in eastern Asia during summertime. Within three hours, from midday to early afternoon, the contribution of secondary aerosols above the planetary boundary layer (PBL) increased by a factor of three to five, and the coatings on black carbon (BC) also increased and enhanced its absorption efficiency by 50%. This tended to result from the intensive actinic flux received a…
