Aspectual choice in Russian perception verbs
Through a usage-based approach, this study examines aspectual choice in two pairs of Russian perception verbs: videt’ . IPF–uvidet’ . PF (‘to see’) and slyšat’ . IPF–uslyšat’ . PF (‘to hear’). It is postulated that the imperfective (IPF) forms videt’ and slyšat’ , being atelic, represent the unmarked and default option for expressing past actions including single, completed events. The corresponding perfective (PF) forms have been described as ad…
Inter-Slavic contact at Polish airports
This paper reports on a field investigation of the communicative strategies observed at Polish international airports. The topic is particularly relevant in light of the lexical and grammatical proximity between the most common languages of the area – Polish and East Slavic (Belarusian, Russian, Ukrainian) – which in principle allows for partial mutual intelligibility. Data were collected through unobtrusive observation of naturally occurring int…
First-exposure L2 acquisition and loss
Integrating the concept of Aktionsart into the teaching of Russian verbal aspect
This paper evaluates a pedagogical intervention targeting verbal aspect selection in L2 Russian through explicit reflection on the role of Aktionsart. In some contexts, aspect in native use is mainly determined by this category, which, however, is hardly part of L2 Russian syllabi. In this study, 99 Italian learners of L2 Russian were divided into an experimental and a control group. The control group followed the standard syllabus, while the exp…
Italian Slavistics and Second Language Acquisition Studies
The article reflects on the significant growth of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research in the work of Italian Slavists over the last twenty years. More specifically, it discusses the fruitful contributions made to diverse strands of SLA research, including the acquisition of the verb system, pragmatics, phonetics, the role of input in the initial stages of L2 development, and the language teaching applications of corpus linguistics. The rev…
The impact of interlingual correspondences on cognate recognition in Slavic intercomprehension
The present paper is devoted to the problem of cognate recognition in an intercomprehension setting, in which the target language is not directly known to the readers, but is closely related to their native language. Previous research has shown that once context is accounted for, intelligibility is partially predicted by measures of interlingual proximity such as Levenshtein distance. Taken alone, however, such measures are insufficient to fully …
Interkomprehensja w nauczaniu języka polskiego jako obcego (jpjo) Słowian wschodnich
Tematem artykułu jest nauczanie JPJO w oparciu o podobieństwa leksykalne i gramatyczne pomiędzy językiem polskim i językami wschodniosłowiańskimi w celu ułatwienia i przyspieszenia procesu akwizycji. Po wprowadzeniu do teoretycznego zakresu badań przedstawiają się autorską koncepcję psycholingwistycznych badań empirycznych oraz wyniki projektu badawczego, prezentującego opis sekwencji akwizycji wybranych elementów polskiej morfoskładni. Szczególn…
Production of inflectional morphology in intercomprehension-based language teaching
The present paper investigates the acquisition of L3 Polish by L1 Italian university students of L2 Russian. The participants had never studied the L3 prior to the experiment, but took a meta-linguistically explicit course in Slavic Linguistics focussing on Polish/Russian contrastive grammar. The main research question is whether or not the similarity of the target structure in the two languages allows learners to transfer the L2 processing mecha…
