  • Exploring Visceral Fat as a Screening Marker for Cardiometabolic Risk in Children and Adolescents

Open Access•Xia Wang, Hong Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2025

Objective: To establish and validate age- and sex-specific visceral fat area (VFA) cutoff values for the effective identification of cardiometabolic risk (CMR) in children and adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 8133 participants was conducted to derive age- and sex-specific VFA cutoffs, which were validated in a longitudinal cohort comprising 10,805 individuals. The predictive performance of the derived VFA cutoffs for CMR wa…

  • Body fat variation and redistribution across different stages of life measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry

Open Access•Hongbo Dong, Hong Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2024

Background: The global obesity epidemic of all ages has increased the demand for accurate management of body fat in each stage of life. The primary aim of this study was to provide reference centiles of body fat indices for Chinese children and adults and compare those with ethnicities from USA using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Methods: The samples were drawn from two nationwide cross-sectional surveys of China Body Composition Life-c…

  • Difference of glucose and lipid metabolism abnormalities and body fat between the Chinese and USA teenagers

Open Access•Yiwen Huang, Liwang Gao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2023

Background: Comparing body fat and the effect of body fat on metabolic abnormalities in Chinese and USA teenagers may provide clues for the early prevention and control of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We aimed to compare the prevalence of glucose and lipid metabolism abnormalities, body fat amount and distribution, and the effect of body fat on glucose and lipid metabolism in Chinese and US teenagers. Methods: We included 5424 Chinese teenagers …

  • Temporal trends in cardiovascular health among Chinese urban children and adolescents, 2004–2019 pre-pandemic Covid-19

Open Access•Pei Xiao, Hong Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Objective: Little is known about pre-pandemic cardiovascular health (CVH) status and its temporal variation in Chinese children. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the secular trends and associated factors of CVH in Chinese urban children from 2004 to 2019. Methods: We identified 32,586 individuals in Beijing, aged 6 to 18 years, from three independent cross-sectional studies conducted in 2004, 2014, and 2019, respectively. CVH was assessed by 7 metrics …

  • Making sense of the unexpected

Hongbo Dong, Martin Cortazzi et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Intercultural…•2022•References: 10

This paper reports the use of critical incidents in three rounds of purpose-designed training events for 87 staff in three Chinese universities. To develop intercultural communicative competence (ICC), we present a possible framework of six intercultural approaches, combinations of which yield relevant principles as a rationale for ways of teaching ICC and for using critical incidents. Feedback through questionnaires and interviews, plus observer…

  • The prevalence of smoking, second-hand smoke exposure, and knowledge of the health hazards of smoking among internal migrants in 12 provinces in China

Open Access•Yunting Zheng, Ying Ji et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Current smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke among internal migrants in China is high. Socio-demographic characteristics and migration status were strongly associated with current smoking and second-hand smoke exposure. We recommend specifically targeted tobacco control interventions to help to address these risk factors, such as focusing on divorced/widowed women
