The role of pickup truck electrification in the decarbonization of light-duty vehicles
Electrification can reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of light-duty vehicles. Previous studies have focused on comparing battery electric vehicle (BEV) sedans to their conventional internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) or hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) counterparts. We extend the analysis to different vehicle classes by conducting a cradle-to-grave life cycle GHG assessment of model year 2020 ICEV, HEV, and BEV sedans, sports utility v…

The Gravity Model
The gravity model in economics was until relatively recently an intellectual orphan, unconnected to the rich family of economic theory. This review is a tale of the orphan's reunion with its heritage and the benefits that have flowed from it.Gravity has long been one of the most successful empirical models in economics.Incorporating the theoretical foundations of gravity into recent practice has led to a richer and more accurate estimation and int…
Telephone coverage and measurement of health risk indicators: Data from the National Health Interview Survey
OBJECTIVES: This study compared health behavior variables for all US households and households with telephones to measure the potential impact of telephone coverage on estimates from telephone surveys. METHODS: Data were derived from the 1991 through 1994 version of the National Health Interview Survey. RESULTS: Ninety-five percent of respondents lived in households with telephones. Differences in health indicators were small (
HIV antibody testing and posttest counseling in the United States: Data from the 1989 National Health Interview Survey
To see how successful human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) counseling and testing efforts have been in testing the United States population, particularly among those at increased risk for HIV infection, we analyzed data from the 1989 National Health Interview Survey. Twenty percent of the NHIS sample (or, in terms of the general US population, an estimated 36 million persons) reported having been tested for HIV antibodies, mostly through blood dona…

The Public Utility Commission of Texas: A Case of Capture or Rapture? 1
Anderson reviews the notion of the “captured” regulatory agency and summarizes four theories for how it occurs. The author then uses the example of the newly formed Texas Public Utility Commission to demonstrate none of the four apply; that the regulators became “enraptured” with the interests of the industry rather than “captured” by them

Space-Time Budgets and Activity Studies in Urban Geography and Planning
This paper attempts to provide a general perspective on the potentialities and limitations of research into individual activity patterns. The most common types of activity study and data-collecting device are briefly described, and problems of data collection and analysis are outlined. The main focus is on the value of 'space-time budgets' in household surveys, assessed with respect to two contrasting aims: (1) deriving 'behavioural' postulates o…
