Occupational stress and mental well-being in a cohort of Black South African teachers
This study explored levels of occupational stress and mental well-being of a cohort of Black South African teachers. 200 secondary school teachers completed the Teacher Stress Inventory (TSI: Boyle, Borg, Falzon, & Baglion, 1995), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28: Goldberg & Hillier, 1979 Goldberg, D. P., & Hillier, V. F. (1979). A scaled version of the General Health Questionnaire. Psychological Medicine, 9, 139–145. doi: 10.1017/S0033291700…
Self-Efficacy, Collective Efficacy and the Psychological Well-Being of Groups in Transition
This study sought to determine the differential influence of self- and collective efficacy beliefs on the psychological well-being of individuals within a community in transition. A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from 1050 Setswana speaking participants from urban (n = 451) and rural (n = 599) areas in the North-West Province of South-Africa. The Community Collective Efficacy Scale (CCES) and the Generalized Self-Efficacy …
Coping Self-Efficacy as Mediator in the Dynamics of Psychological Well-Being in Various Contexts
The aim of this study was to explore whether coping self-efficacy mediates between various distress related variables on the one hand (symptoms of stress and depression), and the degree of psycho-social well-being as measured on the upper end of the mental health continuum on the other hand. Participants were two multi-cultural student groups (n1 = 568; n2=1480) as well as two community samples of Setswana speaking adults (n3=477; n4=1275). Stude…
Psychometric Properties of the Short Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SSRQ) in a South African Context
Self-regulation (SR), an important construct within the psychological well-being context, involves the ability to monitor behaviour, to contrast it with reference values and to introduce adjustments where necessary. A lack of validated measures of SR in the South African context has contributed to the current caveat in our knowledge of the potential importance of this construct. This investigation aimed to establish the utility of the Short Self-…
Validation of a Coping Scale in an African Context
The research aims were to compile and validate a multi-dimensional coping measure, taking African-centred coping behaviour into consideration. In a pilot study the Setswana-COPE (S-COPE) and the Africultural Coping Systems Inventory (ACSI) were administered to Setswana-speaking participants (N = 274). Selected items from these measures were combined into a single 35-item measure, the N-COPE, which was administered to another group of Setswana-spe…
Validation of a Community Collective Efficacy Scale in an African Context
The aim of this study was to validate a community collective efficacy scale in an African context. An abridged version of the Community Collective Efficacy Scale was validated in a cross-sectional survey design. Participants (N = 1050) from urban (n = 451) and rural (n = 599) areas completed the CCES and other measures of self-efficacy and psychological well-being. Results indicated a Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient of 0.72 and satisfactor…
Caring for a Spouse with Alzheimer's Disease: Stressors and Strengths
This study focused on the experiences of eight female participants who were responsible for the daily care of their husbands, all of whom were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. An essentially qualitative research approach, triangulated with certain quantitative measures, was used to identify both stressors and strengths reported by these caregivers. Results from mental health questionnaires showed that the comprehensive social, economic and hea…
