  • Religiosität und Integration: Drei Bemerkungen zu einer ambivalenten Beziehung

    Open Access•Heinz Fassmann•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Journal for…•2017

European societies have become more and more multiethnic and multireligious due to the large amount of immigration in recent decades. The core of the contribution deals with the role religious affiliation plays in the integration process. In theory, religion is an important unifying factor for newly arrivedmigrants, but this is of decreasing importance parallel to the increasing length of stay in the target country. Inempirical studies, this time…

  • Turks in Europe: Migration Flows, Migrant Stocks and Demographic Structure

    Open Access•Heinz Fassmann, Ahmet Içduygu•ARTICLE•European Review•2013•Cited by: 4

Presented here is an overview of migration flows and demographic structures of Turks in Europe over the past 50 years. Large-scale labour migration from Turkey to Europe occurred between 1961 and 1974. After that, it gave way to family migration, which today has more or less ended. Recently, there is slightly more emigration than immigration from the European point of view. Thus, stable migrant stocks developed in the receiving countries, especia…

Examines the migration potential in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, & Slovakia, using 1996 survey data from 4,392 persons. Results indicate that all scenarios that predict an imminent exodus of people from East & Central Europe are exaggerating the real dimension of East-West migration. The migration potential in the four countries investigated here is between 700,000 & (potentially) 4 million persons, higher than the numbers foreseen by the…

    Heinz Fassmann, Jean-Paul Masser•ARTICLE•Hommes & migrations•1996

    Open Access•Heinz Fassmann, Rainer Münz•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This article's thesis is that Europe is undergoing an international but intracontinental migration such as it has not seen since the beginning of the Cold War. The authors cite several reasons for the recent outburst of migration: ethnic relocation, the search for refuge and asylum, and the need for work. They also present a country-by-country description of sending and receiving nations. The push and pull factors causing such massive migration c…
