  • With your permission? Legal restrictions on metal detecting and their implications for archaeogeophysical surveys in Germany

    Open Access•Joris Coolen•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2025

Varying legal frameworks on metal detecting and geophysical prospection in Germany, Practical implications and inconsistencies regarding non-invasive surveys

  • Multi-Method Archaeological Prospection and Integrated Interpretation. Investigation of the Kreuttal Area in Austria

    Open Access•Matthias Kucera, Roderick B Salisbury et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Austriaca•2024•Cited by: 1

Since its foundation in 2010, the Vienna-based Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology (LBI ArchPro) has been investigating the Kreuttal, an area located 25 km north of Vienna, as one of several case studies. Different methods have been tested and developed for efficient archaeological prospection. The methods applied include geophysical prospection, airborne and terrestrial laser scanning, aerial photogr…

  • Potential and Challenges of UAV-Borne Magnetic Measurements for Archaeological Prospection

    Open Access•Volkmar Schmidt, Joris Coolen•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2021•References: 1

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) can be used for airborne magnetic prospection.– Comparison of UAV-borne and ground measurements shows good agreement.– Measurements at different altitudes show a decline of the anomalies

  • New Insights into a Romanesque Basilica Church in the Deserted Town of Corvey, Germany, Based on a High-Resolution GPR Survey

Open Access•Joris Coolen, Mario Wallner et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 1

High-resolution GPR and magnetometry offer new insights into medieval Corvey.– GPR survey allows for detailed reconstruction of Late Romanesque church.– So-called Market Church possibly among oldest vaulted churches in Westphalia

  • Dynamic beach response to changing storminess of Unst, Shetland

    John Preston, D C W Sanderson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 15

We present major new findings on the stability of Norse landing places on the island of Unst, Shetland, using a combination of geomorphology, OSL dating, fetch analysis, and sediment transport modeling. Islanders needed reliable access to the sea, and exploited sandy beaches as safe landing places. The persistence of beaches was important for long-term continuity of settlement and could be threatened by stormy conditions. Sediment modeling undert…

  • Gallows, Cairns, and Things

    Open Access•Joris Coolen•ARTICLE•Journal of the North Atlantic•2015•References: 7

In this paper, I summarize the evidence of former gallows sites in Shetland from place-names, oral traditions, historical records, and archaeological remains. I make an attempt to date the alleged places of execution by comparison of their spatial distribution with known or presumed historical assembly or court sites and districts. I argue that the Gallow Hills are associated with the post-medieval judicial organization of Shetland rather than th…

  • Places of justice and awe

    Joris Coolen•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Well into the eighteenth century, the European landscape featured gibbets and gallows as tokens of local judicial authority. Despite divergent geography and social structure, the location of gallows is remarkably consistent. The importance of visibility and positioning along major traffic routes and boundaries is well known and therefore rarely considered worthy of further analysis. Historians often uncritically reproduce the motives given by con…

  • From data to structures Multistage geomagnetic data interpretation within the Mautern Hinterland Survey

Open Access•Volker Lindinger, Stefan Groh et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2009•References: 2

While archaeological prospection techniques are constantly being developed and improved, relatively little attention has been paid to the interpretation process. This tendency is illustrated by introductions (Gaffney & Gater, 2003; Aspinall et al., 2008) and papers on geophysical prospection, which usually concentrate on the physical and technical aspects of the matter before (in the latter case) ‘jumping to conclusions’. The lack of attention to…
