  • Van hunebed tot moeras

Open Access•W A B Van Der Sanden, Wijnand van der Sanden•ARTICLE•Paleo-aktueel•2026

From hunebed to peat bog: A tureen-amphora from the Funnel Beaker culture from Steenwijk (Overijssel, the Netherlands) In 1905, G.J. ter Kuile (1871-1954), a lawyer from Twente and one of the ‘forefathers’ of Twente historiography, purchased a beautiful Middle Neolithic tureen-amphora in Steenwijk. The pot dates from Horizon 5 of the Funnel Beaker Culture (2975-2850 BCE). The (anonymous) seller had indicated that the pot came from the destroyed h…

Identifying find spots: Tracing the origin of the orphaned wood in the Groningen Institute of Archaeology basement wet lab. The wood stored in the GIA wet lab for decades may have more contextual information than initially assumed. Several inspections suggest that the material originates from excavations in Ezinge and Leens (Groningen), among other locations. Further detailed research will undoubtedly identify additional objects. We therefore rec…

  • Koper, lood en tin - een uitzonderlijk kralensnoer uit de late bronstijd uit Borger

Open Access•Wijnand van der Sanden, Bertil Van Os•ARTICLE•Paleo-aktueel•2022

Copper, lead and tin – an extraordinary Late Bronze Age string of beads from Borger. Around 2017, an amateur metal detectorist searching at Borger in the immediate vicinity of the base of a Middle Bronze Age barrow, which had been excavated in 1987, came across 245 metal beads: four large beads and 241 small ones. One of the four large beads is made of lead, two are of a lead/tin alloy and one is of copper; the 241 biconical and cylindrical small…

  • The Strata Florida Manikin

Open Access•Wijnand van der Sanden, Rick Turner•ARTICLE•Journal of Wetland Archaeology•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The beautiful, 13cm tall figurine from Strata Florida (Wales, UK) surfaced in 1902 but disappeared into oblivion soon afterwards – because it was deemed an ethnographic import from the American Northwest Coast. It was rediscovered in the early nineties by the second author. In this paper, the 'Strata Florida Manikin' is placed in the context of the northern and north-western European woodcarvings; it is argued that the 2000 year old boxwood figur…
