The Meaning of Emerging Adulthood for the Students at the Public University
This study offers a narrative exploration of Arnett’s theory of emerging adulthood. Using narrative inquiry grounded in sociocultural theory of development, it analyzes written paragraphs collected from 50 college students, across two campuses of a public university in four sections of developmental psychology classes. Through values analysis, nine major values are identified as “organizing principles” in making sense of transition to adulthood: …
Gratitude That Never Was
Conceptions of the ‘ideal immigrant’ as not only compliant but also grateful have long shaped US immigration discourse and material realities. Young immigrant women engaged in service and care work frequently report encountering expectations that they should feel grateful for the opportunities provided by their employers. In this study, I examine the narrated lived experiences of Turkish au pairs, young women on temporary work visas providing chi…
‘It’s all about hazelnuts’
Despite women’s prominent role in agriculture, their experiences and relationships with the land are often framed through essentialist binaries that cast women as caring, and men as economically pragmatic, which obscure the intertwined nature of care and productivity. Drawing on feminist political ecology (FPE), gender and land tenure scholarship, and feminist ethics of care, we examine intergenerational women’s engagement with hazelnut farming i…

Children's access to play during the Covid-19 pandemic in the urban context in Turkey
In this opinion paper, I trace children’s access to play in the urban context against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on the news, civil society organizations’ reports and conversations with experts working in Istanbul, Turkey during the last year, I show how children’s access to public places in the city gets constrained by urban governance that neglects young people’s needs. Examples from the neighborhoods of Istanbul, Turkey, in…

What Is Social Inclusion? Insights From Interventions With Youth Across Migration Systems
Social inclusion is a goal of 21st-century education and social welfare, yet research with violently displaced youth leaves gaps in its meaning. Social inclusion, a societal aim, lacks the perspectives of youth at its center. Given the pressures and power relations involved in learning how young people think and feel about social injustices and the support they need, developmental researchers must find innovative ways to study youth experiences a…
Dynamic values negotiating geo-political narratives across a migration system
In this contemporary world, hyperconnected by migrations and digital media, discourse studies can add important insights about diverse interacting voices. Given increasing contact among individuals, groups, and institutions, understanding discursive interactions across geo-political migration systems requires methodological innovation. This article presents a theory-based research design and analysis of how diverse participants in the process of …
Geographies of children’s play in the context of neoliberal restructuring in Istanbul
This research analyzes the material and discursive transformations of children’s play in the urban context of socio-economic transformations brought about by neoliberal restructuring in Istanbul. Two new private play centers called ‘children’s cities’ and one public playground are investigated by using observation, semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The findings of discourse analysis suggest that processes of privatization, exclusi…
