Religion in the Home-The Sacred Songs of the Drawing Room
The Victorian bourgeois ballad is a distinctive genre that demonstrates the spirituality of religion transferred to the drawing room. This paper will examine in detail four examples of the genre-The Lost Chord, The Holy City, Arise O Sun and The Volunteer Organist to examine the spirituality of the genre in terms of the materials used, the musical construction, the value system underpinning it and the expressive character. It will interrogate the…
Studying spirituality and the arts: A transdisciplinary and multimedia approach
In March 2022, the International Network for the Study of Spirituality (INSS) launched a new Special Interest Group: Spirituality and the Arts (SASIG). This initiative, co-chaired by Lila Moore, June Boyce-Tillman and Annalisa Burello, aims to bring together artists, scholars, health practitioners and anyone with an interest in spirituality and the arts in order to explore and investigate the interconnections between these apparently distinct rea…
Hymns and soil theology
This article will examine changes in our relationship with the earth in theology and ecology in the early part of this century and how these have been reflected in musicking. It will examine existing hymns as museums of a theology that may no longer be relevant, concerning the relationship between the Divine and the earth, often representing a flight from the soil. It will link this with the rediscovery of how Hildegard of Bingen’s concept of vir…
Rebalancing the tradition – Wisdom theology in hymnody
This article will examine gender issues in hymnody through the lens of Wisdom theology and Foucault’s subjugated ways of knowing. It interrogates the place of women in musical leadership in the history of Christianity and the nature of the hymnody that developed under male leadership. It analyses the dominant theology of traditional hymnody and calls for a rebalancing to include women’s creations and feminist theology. It claims that greater atte…
Re-enchanting the world: Music and spirituality
This article will examine the historical and contemporary literature in this area, to produce a model of the phenomenography of the musical experience which is linked with strands in the literature exploring the relationship between religion and spirituality. It interrogates the attitude of Christian theologians to the place of music in worship and its relationship to the sacred. It charts the move from this to a more generalised view of the spir…
When I grow down – music, spirituality and memory loss: A performative lecture on aging
This article uses a postmodern methodology to set out a model of life which consists of a time of growing up and learning to speak, and of growing down when the power of speech and cognition gradually disintegrates. It describes how this was presented at a conference partly by means of drama (including movement and music) at the beginning and ending of a lecture which was designed to show the important role of music at the beginning and end of li…
Revisiting BISFT Summer School 2004, University of Bristol, ‘Embracing Diversity: Seeking Harmony’
The article discusses a model first described in a Keynote and revisited to reflect how certain ways of knowing have become subjugated by the power structures of Western society and need to be brought into relationship with the dominant culture. The original keynote did not examine all the polarities which were developed in Unconventional Wisdom (Boyce-Tillman 2007a). The article explains how I have developed these in my theology, performance and…
Liberating language and concepts of the divine in contemporary hymnody
This article will examine from an auto-ethnographic perspective the language of hymnody and how it has developed over the last 25 years through the period of secularisation and postsecularisation. It will interrogate and analyse the words used for the Divine in a drive towards an inclusive language approach to God. It will look at the arguments of feminist theologians towards feminine images for the Divine and then how far these images will be ac…
Music and well-being
This paper scrutinizes how human beings relate to the wider cosmos in the thinking of the European Middle Ages. The re-invention of the 'spiritual' might liberate Western culture from Cartesian elements within Western Christianity and the consequent limited and exclusive views of musicking. Practical examples of how singing together forms community at a variety of levels will be discussed. Others aspects that will be addressed are: being human; c…
A Box Full of Darkness
This paper is based on a piano piece commissioned by the British and Ireland School of Feminist Theology (BISFT) for its anniversary conference. It interrogates the situations in which the sections of the piece were created through the lens of conceptions of failure. It explores religious experience and identity in mental health contexts and the development of groups associated with Feminist Theology over the past 20 years. It examines the repres…
BISFT – A Tribute
This article describes the dilemmas posed in my life by a conflict between the role models offered to educated women in the 1950s and 1960s and those offered by the surrounding culture. The absence of feminism in the education system and the separation from other women by constructs of the family and motherhood resulted in mental illness. The role of mental health services in reinforcing the surrounding culture is explored and tributes paid to th…
Unconventional Wisdom—Theologizing the Margins
This paper examines how the prevailing knowledge systems of the West reduce and divide us within and between ourselves. It also highlights how these are paralleled by the Wisdom tradition in theology which allows for a more inclusive model of relationality and becoming. The author sets out before us how western systems create and dictate the underlying binary oppositions by which we, almost unconsciously, live out our lives. New ways are suggeste…
