  • Health disparities among Deaf communities from Colombia

Open Access•Jyoti Dalal, Laura Catalina Izquierdo Martínez et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Despite efforts to improve health equity, there is still limited knowledge about the number and characteristics of people with disabilities, particularly the Deaf community. Our aim is to use linguistically and culturally adapted research instruments to measure key health indicators and priorities within the Deaf community from a low- and middle-income country-Colombia, contributing to a better understanding of health inequities. ME…

  • Links across disabilities

Open Access•Jignesh Dalal, Mitra et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

There are consistent positive associations in the experience of functional difficulties in various domains in the six countries under study. Such correlations may reflect barriers to social services including healthcare services and resources (e.g. assistive devices) that may lead to an avoidable deterioration of functioning across domains. Further research is needed on the trajectories of functional difficulties and on structural barriers that p…

  • Differences between persons with and without disability in HIV prevalence, testing, treatment, and care cascade in Tanzania

Open Access•David Chipanta, Mitra et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

We found no significant differences in the odds of having HIV and of accessing ART between persons with and without disability in Tanzania. While PLHIV and disability, were often aware of their HIV-positive status than their non-disabled counterparts, men living with HIV and with disability may have been disadvantaged in having suppressed HIV viral loads. These differences are correctable with disability-inclusive HIV programming. HIV surveys aro…

  • The Challenges of Big Data for Research Ethics Committees

Open Access•Agata Ferretti, Marcello Ienca et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Research on…•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 7

Big data trends in health research challenge the oversight mechanism of the Research Ethics Committees (RECs). The traditional standards of research quality and the mandate of RECs illuminate deficits in facing the computational complexity, methodological novelty, and limited auditability of these approaches. To better understand the challenges facing RECs, we explored the perspectives and attitudes of the members of the seven Swiss Cantonal RECs…

  • Disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration in Colombia

Minerva Rivas Velarde, Janet E Lord et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Rights•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This article examines whether and how the circumstances of Colombian ex-combatants with disabilities were recognized in the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) processes in the period following the adoption of the 2016 peace agreement. Our results suggest severe procedural and substantive shortcomings during the drafting of the peace agreement and the implementation of the DDR processes that exacerbated the exclusion of ex-combat…
