  • Freedom of Association at the echr

    Maria Cahill•ARTICLE•European Journal of Comparative…•2024

This article lays out how the right to freedom of association is protected by the European Court of Human Rights interpreting Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Part i considers how the Court defines “associations” and how it has developed three component aspects of the right: the right to form associations, the right not to be forced to join an association, and the right of the association to organisational autonomy. Part ii …

Language interactions in 68 storytime programs involving 652 child participants were observed and transcribed. Then, textual analysis was conducted to examine the language of singing songs, focusing on how language used in singing songs differs from spoken language in storytime programs. • The Non-Fungible Value of Local Associations and its Invisibility to Law

    Open Access•Maria Cahill•ARTICLE•German Law Journal•2023

This article centers on the idea that there is a non-fungible value inherent in local associations. It uses the work of Paul Kahn to animate what that value might be and to consider why law might not have a clear sightline to it. In Democracy in Our America , Kahn, leaning on Tocqueville’s earlier work, reflects on the nature of volunteerism in local self-government and the value of local associations. Drawing on his experience-based account of t…

  • Extratextual talk in public library storytime programs

Open Access•Maria Cahill, Erin Ingram•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Childhood Research•2022•References: 11

Shared book reading in which children actively participate in the reading of a text via discussion or extratextual talk has been well-established as an activity to advance children’s literacy and language learning, and it is a characteristic practice of public library storytime programs. This study scrutinized the extratextual talk that occurred within the shared reading episodes of 15 public library storytime programs. Findings from this study c…

  • Ambivalent Self-Determination

Maria Cahill•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Irish Politics•2021

This chapter focuses on the interface between international law and Irish constitutionalism. Part I examines how Ireland achieved constitutional self-determination first on the basis of and then in violation of an international treaty. The remainder of the chapter concentrates on the place of international law within the framework provided by the 1937 Constitution. Part II highlights how constitutional law has, in general, required that internati…

  • Recognising Freedom of Thought in Irish Constitutional Law

    Maria Cahill•ARTICLE•European Journal of Comparative…•2021

Recent technological advances have made clear that the law needs to take a stance in relation to freedom of thought. Although there is no formal recognition of freedom of thought in the text of the 1937 Constitution of Ireland, I will argue that such a right does exist in Irish law on the basis of both implicit and initial explicit recognition for freedom of thought in the decisions of the superior courts. Part 2 lays out the ways in which freedo…

  • Watch and Learn

    Kyra Hunting, Adriane Grumbein et al.•ARTICLE•Mass Communication & Society•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 12

The contents of cable channels targeted at children are an important and persistent source of images of education and yet they remain unaccounted for in the research on children, media, and education. Although existing literature indicates a correlation between children’s television programming and attitudes, there is minimal research on how education is itself represented on children’s television. This study begins to address this gap using a co…
