  • Pluractionality of Events in Macuxi

Open Access•Gregory Antono, Francisco França Miguel Makusi et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2023•References: 25

This paper discusses how pluractionality is expressed in Macuxi (Cariban), a South American Indigenous language spoken in Brazil, Guyana and Venezuela. Cross-linguistically, the multiplicity of an action can be expressed by means of specialized pluractional morphemes affixed on verbs, via adverbs, or by reduplication. Previous work on Macuxi claimed that the iterative suffix -pîtî indicates a multiplicity of actions, whereas verbal reduplication …

  • Bare singulars and relative measures in Brazilian Portuguese

    Open Access•Lima, Guillaume Thomas•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2022

Brazilian Portuguese has received much attention in the typology of noun phrases for being a language with a fully-fledged determiner system that also allows generalized bare singular nominals. This paper investigates the use of bare singulars in relative measure constructions, such as um terço de mulher (literally, ‘one third of woman’). We show that Ahn & Sauerland’s (2015, 2017) and Pasternak & Sauerland’s (2020) analysis of relative measure c…

  • A typology of the mass/count distinction in Brazil and its relevance for mass/count theories

    Open Access•Lima, Suzi Lima et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 37

While much work has been done on the description of the mass/count distinction in different geographical areas, Brazilian Indigenous languages are still highly underrepresented in the field. This paper presents the results of a project that involved researchers describing the mass/count distinction in 15 Brazilian Indigenous languages, based on a questionnaire we prepared in 2016 in order to explore the distribution of bare nouns, plurals, numera…

  • Count and mass nouns in Patxohã

Open Access•Anari Bomfim, Anari Braz Bomfim et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2020•References: 1

This paper describes the count/mass distinction in Patxohã, a revitalized language spoken in Bahia and Minas Gerais, Brazil. We observe that only count nouns can be directly combined with numerals and that only count nouns can co-occur with plural determiners. Furthermore, only count nouns can be combined with size adjectives. As for quantifiers, we observe that at least one quantifier in the language (nitxi) can be combined with count and mass n…

  • Manutenção e revitalização linguística no Canadá

  • New perspectives on the count-mass distinction

    Open Access•Lima•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 50

Much work has explored the semantics of count and mass nouns from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. In this paper, we explore some of the recent advances in this field, drawing particularly from descriptions of understudied languages and experimental research. We will focus on two dimensions of the count/mass debate. First, we will explore the debate about what can be counted grammatically, that is, how we define atoms and what role…

  • On the acquisition of distributivity in Yudja

Open Access•Lima, Suzi Lima•ARTICLE•Revista de Estudos da Linguagem•2017•Cited by: 1

This paper explores the acquisition of distributivity in Yudja (Tupi, Brazil) based on a study with children and adults. In this paper, we explore experimentally the hypothesis discussed in previous work (LIMA, 2008) that verbal reduplication is a pluractional marker (LASERSOHN, 2005) that also conveys distributivity. Two preference tasks were performed with 11 adults and 17 children. Adults' results show that the interpretation of ambiguous sent…

  • Container Constructions in Yudja

    Open Access•Lima•ARTICLE•The Baltic International Yearbook…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The possible interpretations of container phrases (such as ‘cups of sugar’) has been long debated in the formal semantics literature because container phrases can be associated with a variety of possible readings that go from individuation to measure. In this paper we explore the interpretation of container phrases in Yudja (Tupi stock, Brazil), a language where container phrases are optional in construction with numerals and are morphosyntactica…

  • The interpretation of Brazilian Portuguese bare singulars in neutral contexts

Open Access•Lima, Suzi Oliveira Lima et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Letras•2016•Cited by: 2

The interpretation of Bare Singular count nouns (henceforth BS nouns) has been at the center of much debate in the literature on countability in Brazilian Portuguese. In this paper, we ad- dress the question whether BS nouns may only be interpreted as mass nouns or as names of kinds, or whether they may also be interpreted as object denoting nouns. It is generally agreed that BS nouns can be interpreted as names of kinds. Furthermore, Beviláqua a…
