Values and beliefs in action research
Following a workshop at the CARN (Collaborative Action Research Network) 2022 conference, this research brought together five practitioner-researchers to consider our underpinning values and beliefs relating to action research. The ethical process of action research is driven by values, beliefs and reflexive practice; however, less is known about how engagement with action research might shape these values and beliefs. The challenges of navigating participatory research
Participatory research (PR) involves people with lived experiences of the research topic as co-creators of knowledge. I have the dual role of being both a doctoral researcher and the co-ordinator of a research group – the Converge Evaluation and Research Team (CERT) – which consists of researchers with lived experience of mental health challenges. I am using evaluation projects conducted by CERT to offer insightful case studies for my doctoral re…
Using a novel autoethnographically-informed research design to explore participants’ experiences of an educational arts programme at a UK university
This article describes a novel autoethnographically-informed approach to exploring participants’ experiences of Converge (a UK university-based educational arts programme) as part of a wider research project focusing on mental health recovery. In addition to using traditional research methods, we developed an innovative and creative autoethnographically-informed approach. We trained 16 Converge students – who we named ‘Storytellers’ – to explore …
Small talk matters! Creating allyship in mental health research
The Converge Evaluation and Research Team (CERT) is a group of UK-based researchers with lived experience of mental health difficulties. There is growing international pressure from major research funders that research projects should be co-produced with those people being researched. This article explores how CERT researchers have sought to achieve such allyship in their work across five projects, including choosing user-friendly interview metho…
'Wow, it's at the University'! Experiences of people with mental illness of an educational arts programme
This study gathered the experiences and perceptions of participants of a university-based programme of free arts education for people who use mental health services, known as Converge. A total of 70 per cent of the authors have lived experience of mental health difficulties and attend Converge courses. A Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach was taken, using Photo Elicitation to facilitate interviews with relatively new Converge participan…
