  • Fugitive Slave Narratives and Atlantic Conspiracies

    Gretchen J Woertendyke•CHAPTER•Hemispheric Regionalism•2016

This chapter traces the influence of the Haitian Revolution throughout the long nineteenth century on fugitive slave narratives and the development of the gothic romance in the nineteenth century. By “fugitive” I mean to highlight the absence of such narratives from critical histories of the form, and the ways in which they fail to conform generically to traditional slave narratives such as Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. • “The Sea Is History”

    Gretchen J Woertendyke•CHAPTER•Hemispheric Regionalism•2016

In this chapter, I read Scottish writer John Howison’s “The Florida Pirate” and its relationship to the writing of two prominent nineteenth-century American writers, Edgar Allan Poe and Herman Melville. The violence of slavery is registered throug…

  • Hemispheric Regionalism

    Gretchen J Woertendyke•BOOK•Hemispheric Regionalism•2016

This broad-ranging study reconfigures US literature as a product of hemispheric relations. 'Hemispheric Regionalism' brings together a rich archive of popular culture, fugitive slave narratives, advertisements, political treatises, and literature to construct a new literary history from a hemispheric and regional perspective

  • Geography, genre, and hemispheric regionalism

    Gretchen J Woertendyke•ARTICLE•Atlantic Studies•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This essay introduces the concept of hemispheric regionalism as a way of understanding the expansive scales of oceanic and hemispheric perspectives. Drawing on Bruno Latour's actor-network theory, hemispheric regionalism flattens the map, and makes visible three things: (1) the different coordinates in play; (2) the importance of the sea in these relations; and (3) the vehicles that travel between different geographic regions. Genre is that vehic…
