  • Exploring the Touch Encounters of Individuals with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) at School

Open Access•Julia Barnes, Rosie Rushton et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

The touch encounters of individuals with PMLD are an under-researched area. The limited and dated research from nursing and social care acknowledges that people with PMLD are likely to encounter high levels of touch throughout their lives. In-person and video observations generated quantit…

  • Vocabulary growth and composition in monolingual and bilingual Basque infants and toddlers

    Open Access•Julia Barnes, Iñaki Garcia•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

The question as to whether there is a threshold value for input below which bilinguals do not achieve a monolingual-like development often arises. Although input does not seem to be determining for learning syntax, according to Juan-Garau and Pérez-Vidal, the amount of vocabulary acquired is proportional to the time of exposure. This article contributes to the current discussion with data from very young children exposed either to monolingual inp…

Barnes reported on the relationship between maternal input and a trilingual child's use of the interrogative in English. Taking as a basis the fact that the child's languag…
