Design principles for origin-destination flow maps
Origin-destination flow maps are often difficult to read due to overlapping flows. Cartographers have developed design principles in manual cartography for origin-destination flow maps to reduce overlaps and increase readability. These design principles are identified and documented using a quantitative content analysis of 97 geographic origin-destination flow maps without branching or merging flows. The effectiveness of selected design principle…
Challenges in adapting example-based texture synthesis for panoramic map creation: A case study
Panoramic hiking and skiing maps are popular among tourists and map collectors. Such three-dimensional (3D) maps allow for easy orientation and provide the observer with an immersive impression of the landscape to be discovered or remembered. The most impressive panoramic masterpieces are almost exclusively painted manually or with minor digital tool support. Software packages that allow modern cartographers to create 3D maps of comparable visual…
Terrain Generalization with Multi-scale Pyramids Constrained by Curvature
This paper presents a method for terrain generalization using Laplacian pyramids. The method pre-processes digital terrain for generating cartographically generalized 3D maps. Map authors can attenuated or amplify selected frequency bands of the terrain with a graphical interface imitating an audio equalizer. Ridge lines and valley lines are localized by curvature indices, and their characteristic shapes are preserved or emphasized using addition…
Modular Web-Based Atlas Information Systems
Atlas information systems (AIS) present spatial information on predefined themes and localities in the form of maps and other representations, generally focusing on correct cartographic appearance and offering a certain degree of user interaction. This article introduces the concept of modular AIS, a concept that is essential for the development of an AIS with modern computer technology. The main advantages of a modular architecture are twofold: …
