Projected increase in the spatial extent of contiguous US summer heat waves and associated attributes
The frequency, intensity and duration of heat waves are all expected to increase as the climate warms in response to increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. The focus of this study is on another dimension of heat waves, their spatial extent, something that has not been studied systematically by researchers but has important implications for associated impacts. Of particular interest are spatially contiguous heat wave regions, examined here over…
Climate Forecast Maps as a Communication and Decision-Support Tool
This paper reports an empirical study of communication issues concerning climate forecasts. Students in a professional master's degree (MPA) program in environmental science and policy participated in the study as prospective policy makers. Participants viewed a set of currently issued precipitation forecast maps, and answered questions designed to assess, in the context relevant to agricultural and environmental decision-making, their understand…
Association of Normal Weather Periods and El Niño Events With Hospitalization for Viral Pneumonia in Females
Objectives. This study examined associations between weather and hospitalizations of females for viral pneumonia during normal weather periods and El Niño events in the California counties of Sacramento and Yolo, San Francisco and San Mateo, and Los Angeles and Orange. Methods. Associations between weather and hospitalizations (lagged 7 days) for January 1983 through June 1998 were evaluated with Poisson regression models. Generalized estimating …
