Operationalising the people-centred approach in small-town heritage governance: Mechanism making in Uchiko, Japan
Under conditions of fragmented authority, demographic decline, and limited institutional capacity, how can the People-Centred Approach (PCA) become operationally embedded in local heritage governance? This article addresses this question through a longitudinal case study of Uchiko Town in Japan, a nationally designated Traditional Buildings Preservation District. Drawing on a Critical Realist research design, the study conceptualises mechanism-ma…
Naming Research Participants in Qualitative Language Learning Research: Numbers, Pseudonyms, or Real Names
This review article examines how researchers name their study participants and how these naming practices reflect their application of the ethical principles of anonymity and confidentiality in qualitative research on language learners. To identify the variety of naming practices in use, we reviewed 181 journal articles that reported on qualitative research on language learners in the context of higher education. Our review identified the use of …
Reproducing place attachment through people-centered heritage practices: Relationship making in Uchiko Town, Japan
In the context of population ageing and depopulation, historic small towns increasingly adopt heritage-led regeneration strategies. The People-Centred Approach (PCA) has become a key discourse in contemporary heritage governance, yet empirical evidence on how PCA becomes affectively embedded in everyday life and how it reshapes place attachment over time remains limited. This study examines Uchiko Town, Japan, a historic small town with more than…
Exploring People-Centred Approaches in the Intersections of Planning History and Heritage Management: The Case of Phrae, Thailand
The ‘People-Centred Approach (PCA)’ emphasises the need to identify the capacity-building requirements of different actors and to actively engage people in the heritage process. However, how to effectively apply PCA in historically significant urban environments, and how to facilitate the integration between planning history and heritage research remain critical research gaps. To answer these questions, our study combines theoretical analysis wit…
The relationship between social networks and subjective cognitive decline in Chinese younger older adults: The mediating effect of self-perception of aging
Younger older adults exhibited a high risk of social isolation, with friend isolation being particularly severe. The significant prevalence of SCD among younger older adults has emerged as a pressing health concern. Social networks exhibited a negative association with SCD, with SPA serving as a mediating role in this relationship. Moving forward, comprehensive interventions aimed at addressing SCD in older adults should consider strategies to en…
A Study of Major Depressive Disorder Based on Resting-State Multilayer EEG Function Network
Depression is a complex mental disease with its pathological mechanism unclear. To depict the complete picture of the abnormal information interaction in a depressed brain, this study is the first to apply fully connected multilayer brain functional (FCMBF) network framework and proposed composite FCMBF (CFCMBF) network framework, combined with graph theory to analyze the within-frequency coupling (WFC) and cross-frequency coupling (CFC) of senso…
Planning and construction of the British concessions and settlements in modern East Asia (1845–1876): Shanghai, Yokohama, and Tianjin
Under British informal imperial policy, East Asia’s system of concessions and settlements rapidly spread and promoted modernization. Especially in the mid- to late nineteenth century, the formative phase of the concession system, Shanghai, Yokohama and Tianjin embraced modern Western urban planning and architectural ideas by implementing Land Regulations (LR). A comparison of institutions, policies and mutual influences resulting from British col…
Social anxiety and loneliness among older adults: A moderated mediation model
The study found that social anxiety can contribute to loneliness by narrowing older adults' social network. High perceived social support can buffer this process, but do not overstate its protective effects. Thus, interventions to reduce social anxiety and improve social network and social support may help prevent and alleviate loneliness in older adults
Health literacy and health outcomes among older patients suffering from chronic diseases: A moderated mediation model
Introduction: Aging brings with an increased risk of chronic diseases among older adults, which could affect health outcomes. Evidence has showed that health literacy is associated with health outcomes. However, limited studies explore the underlying mechanism between health literacy and health outcomes. Hence, this study aimed to determine whether self-efficacy for managing chronic disease mediates the relationship between health literacy and he…

University Preparation Programs in Australia: International Student Perspectives
Existing studies have revealed that prior educational experience plays an important role in student learning, and many international students are encountering challenges while undertaking academic studies at Anglophone universities. However, few studies have examined how the pre-university preparation international students experience assists them in transitioning to university. This study explores, through the perceptions of students, the effect…
Conceptualisation of family and language practice in family language policy research on migrants: A systematic review
Family language policy (FLP) is increasingly recognised as a distinct domain of language policy concerned with the family as an arena of language policy formulation and implementation. While FLP is a relatively new research area, its conceptualisation of family and language practice requires re-examination due to social changes and technological developments, including the expansion of digital communication within families and the rise of globall…
