  • Beyond the recipe: An exploration of user engagement in an online culinary community

    Open Access•Răzvan Săftoiu, Raluca Anghel•ARTICLE•Language and Dialogue•2026

This study investigates user participation in an online cooking community based on 265 comments about a recipe by Jamila, a popular food blogger, chosen for her significant influence in the Romanian culinary blogosphere. 73.6% ( n = 195) are positive, whereas 26.4% ( n = 70) are negative. While positive comments are more common, negative comments reveal more engagement from critics, often characterized by longer responses, detailed critiques, and…

  • Ethnic humour in cartoons: A dialogic perspective

    Open Access•Răzvan Săftoiu, Noémi Tudor•ARTICLE•Language and Dialogue•2023

Cartoons are designed as a response to a social event and aim to create a humorous effect in the audience through their multimodal discourse. The interpretation requires contextual and cultural information which has to be shared by the cartoonist and the audience. Our research focuses on the dialogue of humorous cartoons between the West and the East. From a dialogic perspective, the action, i.e., the cartoons published in the French and Swiss me…

    Open Access•Răzvan Săftoiu•ARTICLE•Language and Dialogue•2019

Over the past hundred years, linguistic schools have put forward and adopted either divergent or convergent positions regarding what language consists of. In this paper, I shall examine the dialogic turn in language study (i.e. language use is dialogic use, any action is dialogically directed either initiatively or reactively) so that readers can get an insight into the complexity of human communication. After the overview, I shall focus on some …

  • The persuasive use of pronouns in action games of election campaigns

Răzvan Săftoiu, Adrian Toader•ARTICLE•Language and Dialogue•2018

Action games of election campaigns are one of the best venues for politicians to team up with specialists in communication studies in order to build, review, construct or deconstruct their own or their opponent’s image with the purpose of persuading the electorate to vote for a certain political group. Various action games of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign are analysed with regard to different dialogic means used by the speaker in order to …

  • The ethnic category from a linguistic perspective

    Open Access•Răzvan Săftoiu•ARTICLE•Diacronia•2017

In this paper, I put forward an analysis from a linguistic perspective of an ethnic category in Romania that is defined by at least two terms: gypsy and Romany. The concept of category refers to the members of a particular group that sets apart from other groups by a set of specific elements acknowledged at the level of a larger community. In interaction, individuals frequently use categories and the set of features that a certain category is cha…

  • Split voices in political discourse

    Răzvan Săftoiu•ARTICLE•Language and Dialogue•2015

In this paper, I consider dialogue in Parliament as central, because it is the dialogic instances that bring to the fore the multivocality of political discourse, and I will show there are “other voices [speaking] through the speaking voice” (Ionescu-Ruxăndoiu 2012, 152). I also start from the premise that, although restrictive and context dependent, in political discourse one may identify instances of the self. Politicians exploit language use w…

  • “Now there is a real effort to make sure people are adhering to orders they are supposed to be adhering to.”: Attitude construction through war journalism

Stanca Măda, Răzvan Săftoiu•ARTICLE•Language and Dialogue•2014

It is widely regarded that war journalism is centred on the dichotomy good/evil, with “good” being (almost always) on the author’s side, who promotes a type of discourse that readers should adhere to. In this paper, we put forward an examination of events in various conflict areas (Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Senegal, and Dagestan) in order to identify and analyse linguistic strategies employed by journalists in order to construct attitudes. We ref…

  • Humour as a branding strategy in political discourse

    Open Access•Răzvan Săftoiu, Carmen Popescu•ARTICLE•Revista signos•2014

In this paper we discuss the construction and consolidation of the political brand 'The Tribune-Jester' in relation to the use of ethnic humor in the form of joking in Romanian parliamentary discourse by a controversial political figure of Romanian politics, Corneliu Vadim Tudor. The data come from transcripts of the meetings from the internet section 'Parliamentary Debates' of the Senate and are analyzed using concepts from discourse analysis, p…

  • An exercise in the theory of conversational resources

    Răzvan Săftoiu•ARTICLE•Language and Dialogue•2012

In this paper, I will discuss and analyse two main resources for interaction in the context of bed and breakfast interactions: spatial and weather. Starting from the premise that guests in a bed and breakfast are from another geographical area, common background is first established by means of a spatial resource — requesting information on their hometown. Once they have some interactional history, they may start looking for other resources so th…
