Development and evaluation of a diet and exercise intervention for promoting sleep, health, and wellbeing within the UK home office police forces
This study tested the impact of a diet and exercise intervention on its impact on self-rated sleep, health, and wellbeing among a sample ( n = 64) of UK police officers and staff. Using a pre- and post-intervention testing design, UK police officers and staff were exposed to a month-long diet and exercise intervention. Measurement before and after the intervention included self-rated sleep quantity, sleep quality, and sleep latency (how long it t…
Validating a novel tool for coding body worn camera footage of police‐community member interactions
Objectives This study aimed to validate a tool for coding police body‐worn camera (BWC) footage to measure the dynamics of police–community encounters, including items related to community members, officer performance, and situational outcomes. Methods Over 1000 BWC videos were scored by five coders who participated in an iterative interrater reliability exercise to improve the agreement. Krippendorf's alphas and a multilevel simultaneous compone…
Citizen attitudes towards the public release of police body-worn camera video footage
This study investigated citizen attitudes about the public release of police body-worn camera (BWC) video. We examined quantitative and qualitative survey data from a convenience sample of 535 citizens living in and around Birmingham, Alabama, USA. We found citizens’ attitudes ranged widely and were often contextualized based on the circumstances of the video and case. Race, gender, and police accountability concerns were significantly related to…
Investigating perceptions of race and ethnic diversity among prospective police officers
Many have suggested police diversity will improve police-community relations, but research testing this hypothesis is inconclusive. We investigated perceptions of police race, ethnicity, and diversity in a heterogeneous sample of prospective police officers. Data are drawn from interviews with 42 criminal justice college students in the Southwestern United States, of which 15 were Hispanic, and who each wanted to become a police officer. Particip…
The Reverse Racism Effect
Research Summary Race‐related debates often assume that implicit racial bias will result in racially biased decisions to shoot. Previous research has examined racial bias in police decisions by pressing “shoot” or “don't‐shoot” buttons in response to pictures of armed and unarmed suspects. As a result of its lack of external validity, however, this methodology provides limited insight into officer behavior in the field. In response, we conducted …
Integrating work environment perceptions
Many of the perceptual variables used in industrial/organizational psychology assess the meaning that work environment attributes have for individuals (e.g., the ambiguity of role prescriptions). This study represents an initial attempt to test the hypothesis that a unifying theme exists for integrating diverse measures of meaning. The unifying theme is based on a hierarchical cognitive model wherein each assessment of meaning reflects a general …
