  • An updated synthesis of the projectile point typology and chronology of Eastern Idaho

Open Access•Joshua G Clements, Joshua Clements et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•2026

The eastern Idaho archaeological record is a unique confluence of the Great Basin, Columbia Plateau, and Great Plains, resulting in a diverse and complex projectile point sequence. This study presents a revised typology and chronology of projectile points in the region, grounded in a comprehensive review of over 750 diagnostic examples from 16 stratified sites and 106 associated radiocarbon dates. We reevaluate existing classifications and propos…

  • Assessing the Impact of Firing on the Elemental Composition of Clays Using X‐Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry

    Open Access•Kyle P Freund, Jeremias M Pink et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026

The use of energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence (ED‐XRF) spectrometry for analyzing ceramic artifacts typically centers on identifying geochemical groups within an assemblage and/or matching artifacts to specific clay sources or alluvial systems. For those focused on provenance, there are unresolved methodological issues concerning the effects of firing on the composition of raw clays. For this study, raw clays from eastern Idaho were analyzed wi…

  • Fine-grained volcanic lithic sources of eastern Idaho

    Open Access•Kyle P Freund, Jeremias M Pink et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•2026

This research focuses on the geochemistry and archaeological exploitation of fine-grained volcanic (FGV) lithic sources in eastern Idaho. By combining energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) characterization of these sources with a discussion of their exploitation at 27 precontact archaeological sites, this paper provides one of the few overviews of these important resources. The geological context of each source is discussed, and the XRF r…

  • Media ecology ethics

    Joshua Clements•ARTICLE•Explorations in Media Ecology•2025•References: 1

The shifting sands of ethics have implications for communication, namely how humans communicate ideas, how the technologies they use shape and enable the sharing of ideas, how the current information environment stifles or empowers ideas, etc. In the postmodern era, there is no one all-encompassing communication ethic, but myriad ethics in the plural sense. To move the conversation beyond situational ethics, this essay follows a relational approa…

  • Liberty and Listening

    Joshua Clements, Incorporated Listening•ARTICLE•Listening•2024

Several years ago, I read an opinion piece in a college newspaper where the student writer called for suppressing free speech because it was harmful, or worse, hateful. The article’s title was “Hate Speech vs. Freedom of Speech.” The writer’s opinion exhibited a trend growing in higher education that free speech and free expression were somehow anti-American and anti-education. It is precisely this sentiment that Jordi Pujol’s book, The Collapse …

  • Bayesian Analysis of Haskett Projectile Point Radiocarbon Dates in the Intermountain West Demonstrates Contemporaneity with Clovis and Folsom Points

    Richard L Rosencrance, K N Mcdonough et al.•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2024

We evaluate existing radiocarbon dates at sites containing Haskett stemmed projectile points, present 12 new dates from 5 components at 4 sites, and model the age of Haskett points in a multiphase Bayesian framework with trapezium boundaries. We present multiple models with variable prior information to explore the impacts of different interpretations of the archaeological record, and ultimately favor a model where Haskett points appeared between…
