  • Influence of Sex and Body Composition on Aerobic Capacity in Normal Weight Lean, Normal Weight Obese, and Obese Phenotypes

    Open Access•Sam R Emerson, Samantha M Hart et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Normal weight obesity (NWO) is a body composition phenotype that is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk and is characterized by a normal weight body mass index but elevated body fat. The purpose of this study was to determine sex differences in aerobic capacity across body composition phenotypes, including normal weight lean (NWL), NWO, and traditional obesity (OB). We recruited 60 participants according to three body composition pheno…

  • The acute inflammatory effects of weight stigma

    Open Access•Natalie G Keirns, Bryant H Keirns et al.•ARTICLE•Stigma and Health•2023

Weight stigma is a chronic stressor and may contribute to cardiometabolic health risk. This pilot study tests an experimental protocol exploring acute inflammation as a potential biological mechanism connecting weight stigma and disease risk. Preliminary effect sizes and protocol feasibility were assessed. Women ( N =44, 68% white) with overweight/obesity ( M BMI =33.2±6.7 kg/m 2 ) were randomized to either weight stigma ( n =22) or control ( n =…

  • Associations between internalized weight stigma and visceral adipose tissue status are observed in women but not men

    Open Access•Natalie G Keirns, Bryant H Keirns et al.•ARTICLE•Stigma and Health•2022

Internalization of weight stigma was associated with greater visceral adiposity in women across the BMI spectrum, suggesting it as a chronic stressor. Future studies should investigate directionality and causality of this relationship to elucidate mechanisms of stigma-associated CVD risk

  • Household Air Pollution Exposure and Influence of Lifestyle on Respiratory Health and Lung Function in Belizean Adults and Children

    Open Access•Stephanie P Kurti, Allison N Kurti et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Household air pollution (HAP) contributes to the global burden of disease. Our primary purpose was to determine whether HAP exposure was associated with reduced lung function and respiratory and non-respiratory symptoms in Belizean adults and children. Our secondary purpose was to investigate whether lifestyle (physical activity (PA) and fruit and vegetable consumption (FV)) is associated with reported symptoms. Belizean adults (n = 67, 19 Male) …

  • The potential link between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and post-exercise airway narrowing across puberty

    Open Access•Sam R Emerson, Sara K Rosenkranz et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2016

Objective The prevalence of asthma is rising, presenting serious public health challenges. Recent data suggest that sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption plays a role in asthma aetiology. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether SSB consumption is linked to post-exercise airway narrowing (predictor of asthma development) across puberty. Design Participants completed pulmonary function tests, physical activity and dietary hab…
