Reliability of Parental Recall of Birth Weight, Birth Length and Gestational Age in the Multicenter Cohort Study Idefics
In general, parents' information matched well with the medical check-up booklet. However, accuracy varied among different groups which should be taken into consideration when using birth data recalled by parents in studies of child health
Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Associations Between Psychosocial Well-Being and Cardiometabolic Markers in European Children and Adolescents
OBJECTIVE: Research examining aspects of positive mental health as potential predictors of cardiometabolic health in young populations is scarce. We investigated the associations between psychosocial well-being and waist circumference (WAIST), blood pressure (BP), the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol considering life-style factors as mediators. METHODS: Data of European c…
Urinary Mineral Concentrations in European Pre-Adolescent Children and Their Association with Calcaneal Bone Quantitative Ultrasound Measurements
This study investigates differences and associations between urinary mineral concentrations and calcaneal bone measures assessed by quantitative ultrasonography (QUS) in 4322 children (3.1-11.9 years, 50.6% boys) from seven European countries. Urinary mineral concentrations and calcaneal QUS parameters differed significantly across countries. Clustering revealed a lower stiffness index (SI) in children with low and medium urinary mineral concentr…
BMI, eating habits and sleep in relation to salivary counts of mutans streptococci in children – the Idefics Sweden study
Objective The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between salivary counts of mutans streptococci (MS) and children’s weight status, while considering associated covariates. MS ferments carbohydrates from the diet and contributes to caries by lowering the pH in dental plaque. In adults, high counts of MS in saliva have been associated with overweight, but this has not been shown in children. Design Cross-sectional stu…
Reference values for blood pressure in European children aged 2–11 years. Results of the Idefics study
Physical activity and sedentary behaviour in European children
Objective To estimate the prevalence of physical activity and sedentary behaviours in European children, and to evaluate the relationship between media availability in personal space and physical activity in relation to total screen time. Design Data from the baseline IDEFICS (Identification and prevention of dietary- and lifestyle-induced health effects in children and infants) cross-sectional survey. Information on hours of television/digital v…
Assessment of selection bias in a health survey of children and families – the Idefics Sweden-study
Families with single parenthood, foreign background, low education and income were underrepresented in the IDEFICS Sweden study. BMI at inclusion had no selection effect, but developing obesity was significantly greater among referents
Proper Food and a Tight Budget
Much attention has been devoted in recent years to issues of food and health in childhood. Being a parent today implies exposure to multiple discourses concerning food and health and how best to bring up one's child. In this study, parents from German and Swedish families with low socio-economic status took part in qualitative studies to examine issues of food in relation to health. The findings suggest that eating habits are influenced by a numb…
