Race-Specific Pathways to Understanding the Impact of Social Media Use on Covid-19 Vaccine Confidence Among US Citizens
This study investigates fluctuations in COVID-19 vaccine rates between Black and White Americans by surveying a demographically proportionate sample of 2,412 individuals in April 2023. We found that dependency on social media was a significant negative correlate for vaccine confidence, regardless of race. However, moderation models uncovered a critical race-based asymmetry: institutional confidence and psychological reactance significantly modera…
The influence of visual and textual frames on people’s perception of migrants
This study investigated how the combination of textual and visual frames influences the attribution of responsibility for arrest and deportation of undocumented migrants and empathy. A 3 visual frame: (no photo, stereotypical photo, counter-stereotypical photo) × 2 textual frame: (episodic, thematic) between-subjects online experiment revealed that including a counter-stereotypical photograph in both episodic and thematic news stories had a posit…
Photojournalists’ visual framing of criminal jury trials in national U.S. digital news
A content analysis of U.S. digital news reveals that the visual coverage of criminal jury trials mainly focuses on defendants and law enforcement officials. The U.S. digital news still often use mugshots to portray Black/African American defendants, and law enforcement officials are significantly overrepresented as White and male. In partial contrast to past news coverage, Black/African American defendants are not depicted in handcuff at the crim…
Health News and Responsibility
Framing the Social Determinants of Health
Every day we are bombarded with millions of still and moving images, which we usually view in a variety of media: on legacy print and broadcast platforms and with digital devices ranging from traditional desktop computers to laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Many of these visuals depict the horror and tragedy of war or the politically motivated violence often labeled “terrorism.” Because the photojournalist’s lens or, increasingly, the soldier’s…
The Role of an African‐American Candidate on Psychological Engagement and Political Discussion in a Local Election
There have been numerous studies of African‐American political participation, but little research investigating the effect of African‐American candidates on political discussion. This is surprising, given the importance of political discussion in democratic theory and the increased attention it has received in the literature. We address this gap by examining the effect of a successful African‐American Democratic candidate on psychological engagem…
