Under the GDPR, a valid consent must satisfy a number of requirements to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the ePrivacy Directive (ePD). The article evaluates the design of consent banners using a common and popular usability inspection method in human–computer interaction scholarship known as heuristic evaluation, which enables the researcher to identify challenges in technical provision and new generative opportuniti…
Leveraging interdisciplinary methods for evidence collection in enforcement
“Dark patterns” are manipulative, deceptive design practices deployed in online services to influence users’ decisions towards undesired or negative outcomes. Interdisciplinary by nature, dark patterns implicate concepts of autonomy and choice from law, human behaviour from the psychology and social science disciplines, and design and human-computer interaction (HCI) from technical fields and industry. A body of enforcement actions and regulatory…
How Sticky Is Retirement Behavior in the United States
We study how increases in the U.S. Social Security full retirement age (FRA) affect benefit-claiming behavior and retirement behavior separately. Using long panels of Social Security administrative data, we implement complementary research designs of a traditional cohort analysis and a regression-discontinuity design. We find that while claiming ages strongly and immediately shift in response to increases in the FRA, retirement ages exhibit persi…
The role of design ethics in maintaining students' privacy
Maintaining students' privacy in higher education, an integral aspect of learning design and technology integration, is not only a matter of policy and law but also a matter of design ethics. Similar to faculty educators, learning designers in higher education play a vital role in maintaining students' privacy by designing learning experiences that rely on online technology integration. Like other professional designers, they need to care for the…

Digital civics goes abroad
HCI education reflects the continual evolution of HCI, embracing the changing landscapes of technology, infrastructure, and technology use. This forum aims to provide a platform for HCI educators, practitioners, researchers, and students to share their perspectives, reflections, and experiences related to HCI education. --- Sukeshini Grandhi, Editor
The Dark (Patterns) Side of UX Design
Interest in critical scholarship that engages with the complexity of user experience (UX) practice is rapidly expanding, yet the vocabulary for describing and assessing criticality in practice is currently lacking. In this paper, we outline and explore the limits of a specific ethical phenomenon known as "dark patterns," where user value is supplanted in favor of shareholder value. We assembled a corpus of examples of practitioner-identified dark…
The Practice and Ethics of Animal-Assisted Therapy with Children and Young People
The powerful nature of relationships between human beings and animals has been documented extensively within the human services literature. Research on the human–animal bond has traversed diverse topics and fields of practice. Examples include the physical and mental health benefits of companion animals, the place of companion animals in the family system, the significance of cruelty against animals as a predictor of future violent behaviour and …
In Defence of the Heartland
The British geographer, Sir Halford J. Mackinder, was not the founder of geopolitics, but by a wide margin he was its most profound and influential theorist. Unsurprisingly, his three principal geopolitical analyses—in 1904, 1919, and 1943—reflected the strategic, political, and technological circumstances of their time. That necessary fact notwithstanding, many people may be surprised to learn that in its basic assumptions and general framework …
The Reformation of Deterrence
The purpose of this study is to advance the deterrence reformation that has as its principal manifesto Keith Payne's book, The Fallacies of Cold War Deterrence and a New Direction (2001). The argument complements and augments that of Payne. It reflects the view that in order to succeed, this reformation requires many studies, much persuasion, considerable time, and an official commitment to a new approach to the problem of deterrence. The study i…

Clausewitz rules, OK? The future is the past—with GPS
The confessions of a neoclassical realist In 1972, Hedley Bull wrote that ‘the sources of facile optimism and narrow moralism never dry up, and the lessons of the “realists” have to be learnt afresh by every new generation.‘ He proceeded to claim, with undue emphasis, that ‘in terms of the academic study of international relations, the stream of thinking and writing that began with Niebuhr and Carr has long run its course.’ The scholarly problems…
Global Security and Economic Well-being
The end of the Cold War has wrought havoc among Western students of strategy as well as among and to the political institutions of the post-war period. Many erstwhile ‘strategists' have decided that it is more correct for the 1990s to become specialists in security, even global security. This paper examines critically, in strategic perspective, the purported connections between economic well-being and global security. The proposition that a strat…
