Individual differences in visuospatial working memory capacity influence the modality effect
The cognitive theory of multimedia learning postulates learning information in a dual‐modality design is more effective than in a single modality, which is known as the modality effect. Research has found that the modality effect supports problem‐solving learning, but not retention‐based learning. This divergence in findings can be explained by the mediating effects of individual differences in visuospatial working memory. The current study confi…
Older adults’ self-efficacy in computer use and the factors that impact their self-efficacy
The current study examined the older adults’ self-efficacy in computer use and explored the factors that impacted and mediated their self-efficacy. Older adults (N = 339) were recruited from a western mid-size city in the U.S. and participated in a survey. Results of the path analysis revealed that computer experience and financial health factors were predictors that significantly impacted the outcome, i.e., the older adults’ self-efficacy in com…

Cross-Language Priming of Word Meaning During Second Language Sentence Comprehension
The experiment investigated the benefit to second language (L2) sentence comprehension of priming word meanings with brief visual exposure to first language (L1) translation equivalents. Native English speakers learning Mandarin evaluated the validity of aurally presented Mandarin sentences. For selected words in half of the sentences there was synchronized visual exposure for 100 ms of English translation equivalents. This reduced response times…
