  • A corpus approach to the history of Russian po delimitatives

    Open Access•Hanne Martine Eckhoff•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2018

This paper illustrates how enriched diachronic treebank data can shed new light on an old and vexed topic, even when that topic is primarily morphological and semantic in nature rather than syntactic. The topic is the rise of the Russian po delimitatives, a change seen as crucial in most accounts of the history of Russian aspect, since it represents a major step in generalising the derivational aspect system. Earlier accounts concur that the po d…

  • Predicting Russian Aspect by Frequency Across Genres

Hanne E Eckhoff, Hanne Martine Eckhoff et al.•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•2017

We ask whether the aspect of individual verbs can be predicted based on the statistical distribution of their inflectional forms and how this is influenced by genre. To address these questions, we present an analysis of the “grammatical profiles” (relative frequency distributions of inflectional forms) of three samples of verbs extracted from the Russian National Corpus, representing three genres: Journalistic prose, Fiction, and Scientific-Techn…

  • Aspect and prefixation in Old Church Slavonic

Open Access•Hanne Martine Eckhoff, Dag Haug et al.•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2015

In this article we focus on one grammaticalization path to perfective markers, that of the so-called ‘bounder perfectives’ (Bybee & Dahl 1989). Systems with these kinds of perfective markers – often called ‘Slavic-style aspect’ – are particularly elaborated in the Slavic languages. To examine why this is the case, we study the long-disputed question of the semantic relationship between the inflectional aspectual system inherited from PIE and the …

  • Mapping out the Source domain: Evidence from parallel Old Indo-European data

Hanne Martine Eckhoff, Olga Thomason et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2013

This paper takes a strictly empirical approach to the encoding of spatial notions in the four ancient Indo-European languages Ancient Greek, Latin, Gothic and Old Church Slavonic. By generating semantic maps on the basis of parallel corpus data, without any semantic pre-analysis, we use methods well tested in typology to study the basic divisions in the spatial domain in the four closely-related languages, and to determine the finer subdivisions …

  • A Source of Variation: A Corpus-Based Study of the Choice between απο and εκ in the NT Greek Gospels

Open Access•Hanne Martine Eckhoff, Peter De Swart et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Greek Linguistics•2012•References: 1

Using a quantitative methodology based on extensively annotated corpus data from the PROIEL corpus, we examine the distribution of απο and εκ in the NT Greek Gospels. The original semantic opposition between these two prepositions in terms of an ablative-elative distinction started fading during the historical development of Greek and has been argued to be already much weaker at the time of the New Testament. To explore this we generate a semanti…

  • Breaking down and putting back together: Analysis and synthesis of New Testament Greek

Open Access•Hanne Martine Eckhoff, Marek Majer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Greek Linguistics•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 2

In this paper we fi rst briefl y describe the design of a corpus containing the Koine Greek original text of the New Testament and its translations in to Gothic, Latin, Old Church Slavic and Armenian. We then discuss extensively the annotation that we have applied in each layer of annotation: morphology and syntax, information structure, animacy, and token alignment. For each type of annotation we provide some preliminary results and applications…
