Building Specialized Corpora of Spoken Business Language
The creation of specialized spoken corpora is essential for linguistic research and numerous practical applications, yet it faces significant technical, methodological, and legal challenges. This paper explores three primary approaches to corpus development: in vivo (real‐life recordings), in vitro (scripted recordings), and in silicio (data generated by large language models). While in vivo offers unmatched authenticity and naturalness, legal an…
Linguistic Representations of Women in Old English Prose
This Element traces the origins and earliest manifestations of gender bias in the English language. The analysis is based on a corpus of Old English prose texts, written between the ninth and the eleventh centuries. The results are interpreted in the historical, cultural and literary context of Anglo-Saxon England and early medieval Europe. The investigation shows a significant difference in the way women and men are presented in Old English text…
The DiaBiz-EN Corpus
The paper presents DiaBiz-EN, a parallel corpus of transcriptions of phone-based customer-agent interactions in nine business domains derived from the Polish DiaBiz corpus of transcribed call-centre dialogues (Pęzik et al. 2022). While DiaBiz-EN is a valuable resource for variety of studies of special-domain conversational language, in this paper we focus on evaluating the quality of its translation component in a reception experiment conducted w…

The syntactic status of V-final conjunct clauses in Old English
This study is a corpus-based investigation of the use of the V-final (VF) order in Old English conjunct (or coordinate) clauses. The aim of the analysis is to determine which of the two hypotheses formulated in earlier studies of the subject finds more convincing data support in the available corpora of Old English. According to one interpretation, conjunct clauses are a subtype of main clauses, and the VF order is used in both groups to signal c…
The Diachronic Development of Agency Prepositions in Old and Middle English
This article traces the development of agency prepositions in Old and Middle English passives, documenting the most important stages of the process and presenting them against a larger background of linguistic changes after the Norman Conquest. The study is based on large, syntactically annotated corpora of Early English, and takes into account all the main agency prepositions, that is, þurh ‘through,’ fram ‘from,’ mid ‘with,’ bi ‘by,’ and of, an…
Formulaic language in Old English prose
Although there has been a plethora of research on formulaic language in contemporary English, conducted with various purposes in mind (descriptive, applied and otherwise), studies of formulaic phrasings in Old English texts are rare. In this paper, we employ selected corpus linguistic methods to identify and explore the use and discoursal functions of recurrent multi-word items that contribute the most to the formulaicity of homilies, chronicles …
Old English V-initial and þa- VS main clauses
This study is a corpus-based constructionist analysis of Old English (OE) constituent order, focusing on verb-initial declaratives and þa -VS main clauses. The main objective of the investigation is to determine the degree of the formal and functional similarity of both patterns in order to establish whether they functioned as two independent constructions (in Construction Grammar terms), with their relation based on functional contrast. The othe…
Verb-final conjunct clauses in Old English prose
The aim of this study is to analyse intertextual differences in the use of V-final order in Old English conjunct clauses and to determine to what extent the source of these differences may be Latin influence. The analysis reveals that the frequency of V-final order in OE conjuncts is rather limited in most texts, and Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica surfaces as the text in which the frequency of V-final conjunct clauses is exceptionally high. The st…
Markers of Ælfric's Style
This study is a stylometric analysis of the works authored by Ælfric, a well-known Old English (OE) writer and translator. While the basic aim of the investigation is to identify the most typical linguistic features of his texts, the general idea behind the study is to show the extent of inter-textual variation of OE prose works. Ælfric, a very prolific writer, is responsible for ca. 25% of all prose records of this language. We employ stylometri…
The position of the genitive in Old English prose
The present article is a systematic, large-scale corpus study of the varying position of the Old English adnominal genitive. Particular focus is put on intertextual variation and the potential influence of Latin, which is analysed alongside such intra-linguistic factors as syntactic weight and the animacy of the referent. The model of logistic regression adopted helps address a key issue in studies on genitive placement, namely, if and how multip…
Negation and Verb-initial Order in Old English Main Clauses
This study investigates two Old English (OE) constructions: “negative inversion” (a negated main clause with a clause-initial verb), and “narrative inversion” (a non-negated main clause with a clause-initial verb). The aim is to determine whether the two patterns may be treated as related “constructions” in Construction Grammar terms, and to identify the factors which promote the use of negative inversion in OE prose. The study shows that in both…
The Constituent Order of Hwæt -Clauses in Old English Prose
The aim of the present study is to conduct a comprehensive corpus analysis of the constituent order of main declarative clauses with the interjection hwæt ‘what’ in the clause-initial position in Old English prose texts. On the basis of his analysis of Ælfric's Lives of Saints and Bede's Historia Ecclesiastica , Walkden (2013) claims that such hwæt -clauses pattern with subordinate clauses with respect to their verb position. My study confirms Wa…
Element order in Old English and Old High German translations
This book is the first comprehensive corpus study of element order in Old English and Old High German, which brings to light numerous differences between these two closely related languages. The study’s innovative approach relies on translated texts, which allows the authors to tackle the problem of the apparent incomparability of OE and OHG textual records and to identify the areas of OE and OHG syntax potentially influenced by the Latin source …
