Why conduct a workshop? Poor oral health is a global public health challenge. The combined global prevalence of oral diseases has remained unchanged at 45% over 30 years, a rate higher than other non-communicable dis…

This qualitative study is nested within an ongoing multi-centre birth cohort study in Greater Western Sydney, Australia. Following purposive selection of Hindi-speaking mothers ( n = 19), a semi-structured inte…
Diet, Nutrition, and Oral Health
The purpose of this study was to learn about mothers' experiences with food choices for their pre-school children in underprivileged communities in Greater Western Sydney (GWS). A total of 20 mother-child dyads living in GWS were recruited to a qualitative study from an ongoing birth cohort study. Participants' houses were visited for semi-structured interviews, which were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed thematically. The interviews …
How Do Mothers Living in Socially Deprived Communities Perceive Oral Health of Young Children? A Qualitative Study
This qualitative study aims to explore and gain an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and perceptions of mothers living in Greater Western Sydney (GWS), one of Australia's most socio-economically disadvantaged regions, regarding the factors that influence oral health of young children. Mother-child dyads ( n = 45) were purposively selected from a population-based cohort study in GWS. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were audio-recorded, t…

Mother-infant dyads ( n = 1035) were recruited to the Healthy Smiles Healthy Kids birth cohort study. Study data were collected through telephone interviews at 2, 4…
Developing and Testing of an Oral Health Screening Tool for Midwives to Assess Pregnant Woman
Maternal oral health is important, and midwives are encouraged to screen women for dental problems. We aimed to develop and test a midwifery oral health screening tool. A three-item tool was tested as part of a trial involving 300 women in Southwestern Sydney. A two-item combination showed better sensitivity (98%) and had a positive predictive value of 88%. Specificity was 40%, and negative predictive value was 80%. A two-item screening tool has …
Living Well, Living Longer
It has long been known that people living with severe mental illness (e.g. schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder) have a life expectancy that is 15-25+ years earlier than that of the general population, mostly due to physical health problems such as cardiovascular disease (1-4). However, access to and uptake of appropriate screening and intervention for physical illness is less common in this population (5,6). There is now …
Child and family health nurses' experiences of oral health of preschool children
This study highlights that oral health problems are a significant segment of the child health problems identified by nurses in their daily work. The nurses perceived the problem of dental caries to be one of a lack of parental knowledge, and families should be educated not only on "what" but also on "how" to feed their children. The primary healthcare team should work collaboratively to educate families in a culturally appropriate way
Early childhood feeding practices and dental caries in preschool children
This study will provide evidence of the association of early childhood feeding practices and the oral health of preschool children. In addition, information will be collected on breastfeeding practices and the oral health concerns of mothers living in disadvantaged areas in South Western Sydney
