Identifying interventions that best support the parent and child needs is imperative. The PuP programme aims to improve family functioning and child outcomes by supporting parents who are or have been drug or alcohol dependent. PuP combines psychological principles relating to …

  • Drinking patterns and the distribution of alcohol-related harms in Ireland

    Open Access•Claire O’Dwyer, Deirdre Mongan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Our results indicate that the majority of alcohol consumption and related harms in the Irish population are accounted for by low- and moderate-risk drinkers, and specifically by those who engage in heavy episodic drinking. A population-based approach to reducing alcohol-related harm is most appropriate in the Irish context. Immediate implementation of the measures in the Public Health (Alcohol) Act (2018) is necessary to reduce alcohol-related ha…

  • A Longitudinal Qualitative Analysis of the Lived Experience of the Recovery Process in Opioid-Dependent Patients Post-Detoxification

    Jo‐hanna Ivers, J H Ivers et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2018

Recovery was seen as a process that was not always linear, and lapse and relapse were viewed as part of this process. Patients had great insight into "risk factors for relapse," information and knowledge gained over several years and many treatment episodes. Furthermore, the findings illustrate the role insight plays in any learning and growth experience and the emphasis that is placed upon it within the treatment journey; insight is a fundamenta…

Most studies of alcohol consumption in pregnancy have looked at one time point only, often relying on recall. The aim of this longitudinal study was to determine whether alcohol consumption changes in early and late pregnancy and whether this affects perinatal outcomes. We performed a prospective cohort study, conducted from November 2010 to December 2011 at a teaching hospital in the Republic of Ireland. Of the 907 women with a singleton pregnan…

It reflects the intersection between healthcare, criminal justice and cultural issues in a phenomenon that is harmful to the health of individuals and communities. A review of how opioid misuse has been tackled in Dublin over the past two decades can operate as a case history of how a public health issue was dealt with by a …
