  • Understanding and assessing uncertainty of observational climate datasets for model evaluation using ensembles

Open Access•Marius Zumwald, Knsel et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2020

In climate science, observational gridded climate datasets that are based on in situ measurements serve as evidence for scientific claims and they are used to both calibrate and evaluate models. However, datasets only represent selected aspects of the real world, so when they are used for a specific purpose they can be a source of uncertainty. Here, we present a framework for understanding this uncertainty of observational datasets which distingu…

  • Analysing Spatial Time Series of Local Unemployment

    Open Access•R Dunn•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1987•References: 14

In this paper, the potential of principal components analysis to analyse spatial time series of local unemployment is discussed. A seasonal adjustment procedure is also used which allows trend, seasonal, and irregular subcomponents of the unemployment series to be identified and analysed separately. It is argued that such an approach may provide important insights into the functioning of the regional space economy. Empirical results are presented…

  • Stochastic Panel-Data Models of Urban Shopping Behaviour

    Open Access•Neil Wrigley, R Dunn•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1985•Cited by: 5•References: 14

In this paper the authors describe the way in which the NBD and Dirichlet models of consumer behaviour may be extended to include independent or exogenous variables. Such methods allow the predictions obtained from these models to be disaggregated, that is, to be made conditional on the values of the exogenous variables. Empirical examples are presented of repeat buying of a branded good and at an individual store (for the NBD model), and of mult…

  • Stochastic Panel-Data Models of Urban Shopping Behaviour

    Open Access•Neil Wrigley, R Dunn•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1984•Cited by: 7•References: 5

In this paper, the first application of the NBD (negative binomial distribution) consumer purchasing model is presented in the context of purchasing at individual stores in a single city. Empirical results derived from a recently conducted spatially disaggregate consumer-panel survey in Cardiff, United Kingdom, are reported. The fit of the model, in general, is extremely good, although there are certain small but consistent discrepancies, the exp…

  • Stochastic Panel-Data Models of Urban Shopping Behaviour

    Open Access•Neil Wrigley, R Dunn•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1984•Cited by: 7•References: 6

In this paper, the first application of the Dirichlet model of heterogeneous buyer behaviour, in the context of multistore purchasing in a single city, is presented. Empirical results derived from a recently conducted spatially disaggregate consumer-panel survey in Cardiff, the United Kingdom, are reported. The fit of the model is, in general, extremely good, and its potential for studies of urban consumer behaviour is stressed

  • Stochastic Panel-Data Models of Urban Shopping Behaviour

    Open Access•Neil Wrigley, R Dunn•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1984•Cited by: 5•References: 11

In this paper, the first consideration of the interaction of the processes of store choice and brand choice at the level of individual stores is presented. Empirical results derived from a recently conducted spatially disaggregate consumer-panel survey in Cardiff, the United Kingdom, are reported. These results suggest that store loyalty and brand loyalty are both extremely low. On this basis it is argued that store and brand choice might profita…

  • Spectral Analysis and Distributed Lags in Geographical Studies of Local Unemployment

    Open Access•R Dunn•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1983•Cited by: 4•References: 12

This is the second part of a two-part paper in which the related topics of spectral analysis and the identification and estimation of distributed-lag models between time series are discussed. This paper is mainly concerned with distributed-lag models, in particular the use of spectral estimators developed by Hannan. A number of previous studies have used the phase statistics from the cross-spectrum as an indication of lead/lag relations between u…

  • Parameter Instability in Models of Local Unemployment Responses

    Open Access•R Dunn, Richard S Dunn•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1982•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Following papers by Brechling and Thirlwall, a number of studies have investigated the response of local or regional unemployment series to changes in the national series by means of regression approaches. In this paper a number of statistical tests for regression instability over time are discussed, and then applied to the Brechling model of unemployment responses in thirtynine local areas in the Severnside region. The results suggest marked ins…
