Measuring Goal Progress Using the Goal‐Based Outcome Measure in Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario—An Integrated Youth Services Network
BACKGROUND: Goal-based outcomes (GBOs) are a tool for youth-directed care and have been successfully used in a small number of community youth mental health settings. Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario (YWHO) uses GBO data provided by youth to deliver care that amplifies youth voice in decision-making about supports that are important and meaningful to them. OBJECTIVE: This article summarizes GBO data from youth receiving clinical and nonclinical servic…
Leveraging integrated youth services (IYS) for social prescribing
Mental health service use among youth continues to be low while treatment for substance use has been found insufficient at meeting youth needs. Youth seeking services commonly experience multiple internalizing and externalizing difficulties as well as other challenges, such as substance use, that, when are unaddressed or under-addressed, can lead to poor developmental outcomes. The need for quality integrated services addressing these issues conc…
An innovative digital integrated youth services platform developed with and for youth
Integrated youth services (IYS) have developed at a rapid rate in Canada and across the globe as an innovative way to organize and deliver mental health and substance use (MHSU) services to young people, centering youth co-development and engagement as core components of model development. Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario (YWHO) is Ontario’s commitment to improved service access and outcomes for youth aged 12-25 through the implementation of IYS hubs …
Measuring goal progress using the goal-based outcome (GBO) measure in Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario – an integrated youth mental health service
Problem and Context. There is a growing body of evidence indicating that the prevalence of mental health difficulties, in particular anxiety and depression, is increasing among youth, and many young people in this age group (12-25 years) do not get adequate mental health support. Recently, a global movement to transform youth mental health services is underway with the establishment of integrated youth services (IYS) that offer youth-specific car…
Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario
Problem and Context. The need for youth-friendly early intervention services to meet the mental health, substance use, primary care, and other social needs of adolescents and young adults is well-documented. Clinicians and researchers in child and youth mental health have been calling for better integration of child, youth, and family-facing systems (e.g., health, mental health, child welfare, youth justice, education), as well as increased atten…
Setting the stage for Measurement-Based Care (MBC)
Problem and Context: Measurement-based care (MBC) involves the systematic administration of standardized measures and the use of results to drive clinical decision-making within a therapeutic relationship framework. It is an integral part of youth-centered care and a core standard of integrated youth mental health services. Despite the wealth of evidence for the benefits of MBC in supporting high quality care, the implementation of MBC into routi…
Learning Through a Pandemic
The objective of this paper was to examine the school-related experiences of youth during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants represented both clinical and community youth aged 14 to 28 who were sampled as part of a larger study. Feedback from youth attending school during the pandemic was qualitatively examined and youth who planned to attend school prior to the pandemic and did ( n = 246) and youth who planned to attend but did not ( n = 28) we…
Intervention outcome preferences for youth who are out of work and out of school
Young people want interventions to be individualized and integrated, providing a high level of support for their educational and employment pursuits as well as their mental health and well-being. Incorporating youth's perspectives when designing interventions can increase intervention relevance and potentially service uptake, helping youth continue to pursue their educational and vocational goals
The Wellness Quest
BACKGROUND: Less than 20% of youth who experience mental health difficulties access and receive appropriate treatment. This is exacerbated by barriers such as stigma, confidentiality concerns and lack of mental health literacy. A youth team developed the Wellness Quest: a health literacy tool to enable help-seeking youth to advocate for themselves. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the content, presentation and utility of the Wellness Quest tool among youth…
‘It reshaped how I will do research’
BACKGROUND: Engaging youth and family members as active partners in research and service design offers great promise in improving projects. In youth mental health, recent research has highlighted the value of youth and family engagement. However, research on the experience and impacts of engagement is sparse. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the project team's experience of youth and family engagement in the design and development of the YouthCan I…

Innovate Research
BACKGROUND: Engaging youth in research provides substantial benefits to research about youth-related needs, concerns and interventions. However, researchers require training and capacity development to work in this manner. METHODS: A capacity-building intervention, INNOVATE Research, was co-designed with youth and adult researchers and delivered to researchers in three major academic research institutions across Canada. Fifty-seven attendees part…
Enhancing researcher capacity to engage youth in research
BACKGROUND: There is increasing emphasis on engaging youth in research about youth, their needs, experiences and preferences, notably in health services research. By engaging youth as full partners, research becomes more feasible and relevant, and the validity and richness of findings are enhanced. Consequently, researchers need guidance in engaging youth effectively. This study examines the experiences, needs and knowledge gaps of researchers. M…
