  • Evaluation of surveillance performance and determinants for priority vaccine-preventable diseases in Niger State, Nigeria

Open Access•Oladayo David Awoyale, Akolade Jimoh et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) remain important causes of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, and evidence on subnational surveillance performance in Nigeria remains limited. We conducted a cross-sectional analytic evaluation of surveillance systems for measles, diphtheria, acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), and cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in Niger State, Nigeria. Data were collected from 415 clinicians, community resource persons,…

  • Stakeholders’ perspectives on lessons learnt from HPV mass vaccination in Nigeria

Open Access•Daradara Kubura, Sidney Sampson et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The findings highlight critical lessons for future vaccination programs. Early planning, proactive social mobilization, effective rumor management, and leveraging community networks were instrumental in enhancing vaccine acceptance and coverage. These strategies serve as a model for overcoming barriers to public health interventions and should be prioritized in future efforts to improve HPV and other vaccination programs in Nigeria

  • Partnership coordination for optimized Covid-19 vaccination

Open Access•Saheed Dipo Isiaka, Olugbemisola Wuraola Samuel et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: Developing countries have partnered with non-governmental and development organizations to ensure universal health coverage and promote equity in accessing health services. This study was motivated by the timely and relevant collaborative partnership among the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Sydani Consulting, and other implementing partners at the sub-national level. There is also no evidence of a study on p…

Open Access•Sunday Atobatele, Sidney Sampson et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: Nigeria has a national policy on neglected tropical diseases (NTD) which is coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Health and integrated into the health system at all government levels. A network of grassroots mobilizers, named community drug distributors (CDDs), deliver NTD drugs and commodities to rural and hard-to-reach communities throughout Nigeria. Methods: Interviews with state and local government coordinators of Nigerian NTD …

  • Exploring the perceptions and experiences of mobile teams on Covid-19 vaccine uptake at the community level

Open Access•Saheed Dipo Isiaka, Akolade Uthman Jimoh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This study concluded that social mobilizers play key roles in vaccine uptake, especially at the community level. Their roles in creating awareness, sensitization, and bringing the vaccine closer to hard-to-reach communities contributed to the success attained in the fight against COVID-19 in both states

  • The effect of participatory action research on HPV primary preventive measures among in-school adolescents in Benue State, Nigeria

Open Access•Evelyn Orya, Evelyn Erdoo Orya et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

PAR led to a significant increase in awareness and knowledge of HPV, knowledge of different aspects of HPV infection, and willingness to uptake the HPV vaccine. Additionally, the study has provided evidence that PAR interventions can be a viable tool in delaying sexual initiation and reducing sexual behavioural tendencies, especially in high-risk groups

  • Landscape Analysis of Primary Healthcare Integration; Understanding Barriers and Enablers for People-Centered Care in Low-And-Middle Income Countries

    Open Access•Shiva Gab-deedam, Sidney Sampson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Background: Healthcare interventions in Low-and-Middle Income Countries (LMICs) are mostly disease-specific and exist independently, leading to fragmentation of services and inefficiencies in healthcare delivery. Therefore, the need to integrate interventions and share resources between programs is exigent. The dearth of evidence on the barriers and enablers for seamlessly integrated interventions in LMICs compared to high-income settings, necess…
