  • Spiro

    Open Access•Pat G Camp, Chris Carlsten1 et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Background: The purpose of SPIRO is to increase access to and use of spirometry (the gold standard to diagnose and manage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), with a specific focus on improving the health outcomes of people in remote, rural, and First Nations communities. Approach: We utilize an integrated, equity-focused, learning health system (LHS) approach to provide spirometry and associated respiratory care services to remote, rural, and…

  • Climate change and health

Open Access•Eric S Coker, Susan Stone et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

With the growing climate change crisis, public health agencies and practitioners must increasingly develop guidance documents addressing the public health risks and protective measures associated with multi-hazard events. Our Policy and Practice Review aims to assess current public health guidance and related messaging about co-exposure to wildfire smoke and extreme heat and recommend strengthened messaging to better protect people from these cli…

  • Spatial analysis of tobacco outlet density on secondhand smoke exposure and asthma health among children in Baltimore City

Parisa Kaviany, James P Senter et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2022

Increased tobacco outlet density is associated with higher levels of bedroom air nicotine and serum cotinine. Increasing levels of SHS exposure (air nicotine and serum cotinine) are associated with less controlled childhood asthma. In Baltimore City, the health of children with asthma is adversely impacted in neighbourhoods where tobacco outlets are concentrated. The implications of our findings can inform community-level interventions to address…

  • Neighbourhood characteristics and health outcomes

Panagis Galiatsatos, Cynthia Kineza et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2017

In Baltimore City, median household income is inversely associated with tobacco store density, indicating poorer neighbourhoods in Baltimore City have greater accessibility to tobacco. Additionally, tobacco store density was linked to lower life expectancy, which underscores the necessity for interventions to reduce tobacco store densities
