  • What is the Value of Value for Agrarian Studies

    Open Access•A H Akram-Lodhi, Yadav et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Agrarian Change•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 53

Reflecting a longstanding intellectual heritage in Marxist political economy, contributions to agrarian studies have variously referred to the production, distribution and extraction of value. Despite this central role within the heritage of agrarian studies, the concept of value is often used inconsistently between authors and sometimes deployed without clear elucidation of the underlying theoretical tenets. As such, value often tends to be used…

  • Women stay behind and grow the food: Agricultural productivity and the interstices of petty commodity production and reproductive labour in Tanzania

    Open Access•A H Akram-Lodhi•ARTICLE•Journal of Agrarian Change•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 29

Inspired by the work of Carmen Diana Deere, this paper examines how an analysis of the work of rural production, even when gendered, is compromised if it does not incorporate reproductive labour. The paper presents estimates of the gender yield gap in agricultural crop productivity in Tanzania, along with the statistical causes of the gender yield gap, in order to demonstrate what is and why it matters. The paper then shows that the gender yield …

Scoones et al. [2018. "Emancipatory Rural Politics: Confronting Authoritarian Populism." The Journal of Peasant Studies 45 (1): 1-20] suggests that the contemporary rural world can be characterized as having distinct forms of authoritarian populism. This article argues that key aspects of authoritarian populism are not seen across the breadth and depth of the contemporary rural world, and, as such, the use of authoritarian populism can be politic…

  • Feminist political economy

    Smriti Rao, A H Akram-Lodhi•CHAPTER•Routledge Handbook of Feminist…•2021

This chapter reviews the Marxist-feminist strand within feminist political economy (FPE). As the largest and most influential body of work within FPE, this literature has two core characteristics. First, it explores the mutually constitutive relationship between gender and class, where class is defined as the relationship of a person/group to the production, appropriation, and distribution of surplus. Second, most contemporary feminist political …

Over the course of the twenty-first century, the process of viruses transiting across the species barrier appears to have accelerated as a succession of new diseases has emerged. This paper argues that the forces accelerating the emergence of zoonotics lie in th…

    A H Akram-Lodhi•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2021•Cited by: 32•References: 36

This paper argues, firstly, that the notion that a resolution of the agrarian question requires the dissolution of small-scale farming is not what Marx thought. It argues, secondly, that extractivist capitalist agriculture is not developing the productive forces. It argues, thirdly, that contemporary agroecological farming is a knowledge-intensive form of production that can maximize the productivity of energy flows, which are central to the prod…

  • Alternatives: Fair trade in theory and practice

    A H Akram-Lodhi•ARTICLE•Studies in Political Economy•2018•References: 4

Fair trade has been presented by its advocates as a progressive rural development strategy. Fair trade is, however, a specific configuration of capitalist relations of exploitation in which exploitation takes two forms: the exploitation of labour and monopsonistic exploitation. Moreover, these processes are strongly gendered. As such, fair trade serves to deepen the character of the capitalist market imperatives subordinating peasant farmers and …

  • Economic efficiency and gender equity: A heuristic rationale

    A H Akram-Lodhi•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Development…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Focusing on the case of UNDP’s gender and economic policy training programme (2008–2015), this article examines efficiency arguments from a pedagogical perspective. It argues that efficiency, a concept with which policymakers are familiar, serves a useful heuristic purpose. Iterative, experience-based learning techniques (such as keeping time-use diaries) allow programme participants to examine the sources of gender inequalities in the labour mar…

However, continuing to build food sovereignty requires changes to global and local food systems that have to be undertaken in the messy reality of the present. This article theref…

    A H Akram-Lodhi•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2007•Cited by: 74•References: 4

Market-led agrarian reform is a part of neoliberal agrarian restructuring. It is premised on assumptions that fail to recognise the socially embedded character of land transfers. Agrarian political economy offers an understanding of the processes surrounding land transfers that emphasises social embeddedness. As a consequence of the specific characteristics of neoliberal enclosure market imperatives are now used to deepen capitalist social proper…

    Open Access•A H Akram-Lodhi•ARTICLE•Journal of Agrarian Change•2005•Cited by: 27•References: 14

Vietnam's agrarian transition is reviewed and, against the World Bank view that land markets in Vietnam have been pro-poor, it is suggested that access to land has become stratified within specific provinces, districts and communes. Aggregate data and field research both demonstrate that the technical coefficients of production differ between farms when grouped according to a proxy for wealth, and that this is correlated with productivity per uni…

This paper provides quantitative evidence of a gender division of labor within the households of four peasant classes living in two villages in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. The gender division of labor results in a disproportionate share of total household work being performed by women. Further, the paper demonstrates that an improvement in the economic status of households leads to increased work demands being placed upon women.…

This book, via both general analytical treatment and a series of case studies set in Latin America, Asia and Africa, offers a powerful critique of the World Bank's market-led agrarian reform (MLAR) and provides an alternative model of agrarian reform, the 'food sovereignty movement', that has been articulated by …
