  • Air Aware

Channing Bice, Andrew A Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Communication…•2025

Outdoor workers face increasing health risks from air pollution, however most public health guidance emphasizes moving indoors, a strategy often unavailable to this workforce. This field report describes the co-design, implementation, and early evaluation of Air Aware, a workplace health communication campaign developed with outdoor workers in Fort Collins, Colorado. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and informed by worker insights o…

  • Development to distribution

Open Access•Lucy Chalgren, Andrew A Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Manufactured home communities in the US Mountain West face increasing amounts of exposure to wildfire smoke, magnifying existing environmental health disparities. This study explores a co-creation approach to air quality messaging that is grounded in social cognitive theory and draws from environmental communication research. We examined how manufactured home community experiences, across eight distinct communities, shape the development of local…

  • Seeking congruity for communal and agentic goals

Open Access•Heather Henderson, Brittany Bloodhart et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology of Education•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 14

An abundance of literature has examined barriers to women’s equitable representation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, with many studies demonstrating that STEM fields are not perceived to afford communal goals, a key component of women’s interest in future careers. Using Goal Congruity Theory as a framework, we tested the longitudinal impact of perceptions of STEM career goal affordances, personal communal and agentic …

  • First retrievals of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) from ground-based FTIR solar spectra recorded at remote sites, comparison with model and satellite data

Open Access•Emmanuel Mahieu, Emily V Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2021

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is the main tropospheric reservoir of NOx (NO + NO2). Its lifetime can reach several months in the upper cold troposphere. This enables the long-range transport of NOx radicals, under the form of PAN, far from the regions of emission. The subsequent release of NOx through the PAN thermal decomposition leads to the efficient formation of tropospheric ozone (O3), with important consequences for tropospheric oxidative capa…

  • Could the exception become the rule? “Uncontrollable” air pollution events in the U.S. due to wildland fires

    Open Access•Liji M David, A R Ravishankara et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Exceptional events occur when air pollution in a specific location exceeds the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) due to an event that cannot be reasonably attributed to human activities, such as a wildland fire. Ground-level ozone (O _3 ) and particulate matter (PM) are Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) criteria pollutants regulated under the NAAQS. Smoke from wildland fires can increase PM and O _3 concentrations downwind of fir…

  • Impact of Wildfire Smoke on Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes in Colorado, 2007–2015

Open Access•Mona Abdo, Isabella Ward et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Colorado is regularly impacted by long-range transport of wildfire smoke from upwind regions. This smoke is a major source of ambient PM 2.5 . Maternal exposure to total PM 2.5 during pregnancy has been linked to decreased birth weight and other adverse outcomes, although the impact of wildfire smoke contribution has only recently been investigated. The objective of this study was to estimate associations between adverse pregnancy outcomes and am…

  • Seasonality, sources and sinks of C1–C5 alkyl nitrates in the Colorado Front Range

Open Access•A Abeleira, B Sive et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2018

We describe observations of C1–C5 alkyl nitrates made at the Boulder Atmospheric Observatory in Northern Colorado in winter 2011, spring 2015, and summer 2015. Average mixing ratios of the alkyl nitrates are similar across the seasons, but increased diel variability in summer suggests increased production balanced by increased loss relative to winter and spring. We use a sequential production-destruction model based on ratios of alkyl nitrates to…

  • Evaluating ethane and methane emissions associated with the development of oil and natural gas extraction in North America

Open Access•Bruno Franco, Emmanuel Mahieu et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

Sharp rises in the atmospheric abundance of ethane (C 2 H 6 ) have been detected from 2009 onwards in the Northern Hemisphere as a result of the unprecedented growth in the exploitation of shale gas and tight oil reservoirs in North America. Using time series of C 2 H 6 total columns derived from groundbased Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) observations made at five selected Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change sites, we c…
