Building blocks of religion
Socio-anthropological studies support the conviction that religion originated during the hunter-gatherer phase of Homo sapiens ’ existence. This phase is dated between 50 000 and 15 000 years ago. The hunter-gatherer religion evolved into agricultural religion when small communities settled down and started practising agriculture around 10 000 years ago. This religion then evolved into city-state religion and the city-state religion eventually ev…
The Book of Jonah and the Hermeneutics of Ferdinand E. Deist
Ferdinand E. Deist (1944–1997) was a critical scholar and a prolific author, and had an immeasurable influence on Old Testament and ancient Near Eastern scholarship in South Africa during the last quarter of the previous century. Although he never claimed to be working within the new paradigm which dawned in Old Testament studies towards the end of the nineteenth century, it is evident that he was fully at home within this paradigm. The article d…
The Bible, theology and the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa 1920–2020
Professor Johannes du Plessis (1868–1935) of the Theological Seminary at Stellenbosch was fascinated by the results of the historical-critical research into the Bible. He acquainted his students and readers of the journal Het Zoeklicht with the results of this way of studying the Bible. However, in 1928, he was accused of heresy for cherishing views not aligned with the reformed confessions of faith. After 2 years and many meetings, he was dismis…
Reading the Old Testament in the 21st century using the Book of Jonah as reference
Some Old Testament scholars identify three main types of approaches to the Bible, namely, (1) theological (2) historical and (3) literary. Others would rather refer to different methods of studying the Bible, which can be linked to different worlds. Some methods focus more on the world behind the text, others on the world of the text itself, whilst yet a third group focuses more on the world in front of the text. One reads the text according to w…
The doctrines of original sin and the virgin birth
Two South African theologians, Ben du Toit and Anton van Niekerk, recently published books in which they argued that postmodern believers can no longer subscribe to the doctrines of original sin and the virgin birth. According to them both these doctrines reflect a pre-modern world-view which should be regarded as outdated. However, they would not like to take leave of the grand narrative of Christianity. There are some fundamental flaws in the r…
Om oor God te praat
The book Die vreemde God en sy mense (The enigmatic God and his people) — published in 1998 — marks the beginning of a new debate about God amongst Afrikaans-speaking people of the reformed tradition. The fall of the National Party government and the end of the Apartheid policy in 1994 forced theologians to reflect on the authority of the Bible; the issue of creation, the Big Bang and evolution; the relationship between Christianity and other rel…
Hoe dink vandag se mense oor die Bybel
How do people from our day and age view the Bible? Not all members of the Dutch Reformed Church cherish the same view about Scripture. The letters in the Afrikaans newspapers on religious issues clearly reflect this. There are two groups of scholars in the church whose views on Scripture impact on church members’ views. They are (1) systematic theologians and (2) biblical scholars. A large number of systematic theologians adhere to the view which…
Voëls van eenderse vere? Oor die Israelitiese en Egiptiese wysbeid en voelsimhole
Birds of a feather? Ancient Israelite and Egyptian wisdom and bird symbols Ordinary Bible readers are not always aware that sections of the Old Testament contain material that agrees (almost verbally) with other documents of the ancient Near East. One of these sections is Proverbs 22: 17-24:22. The publication of papyri containing the Egyptian wisdom book "Wisdom of Amen-em-ope" in 1923 made this evident. This article takes a brief look at the hi…
Paradigmaveranderinge in die Bybelwetenskappe 'n Bydrae tot die gesprek tussen die Bybelwetenskappe en Sistematiese Teologie
The impetus of this article is the response of the New Testament scholar Pieter Botha to a book entitled Bondgenoot en beeld (1991) written by the Systematic theologian Adrio König. König's reaction to Botha's discussion and critique published in one of the issues of Theologia Evangelica (1993) reveals a lack of comprehension of the issues at stake. Botha's main critique is that König does not take the Enlightenment seriously. This article commen…
