  • The holy waters of En Four

    Open Access•Arnold M Meiring•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2024

Travellers on the N4 highway just east of Pretoria can see evidence of a sacred spring next to the road with pilgrims moving around the landscape and collecting water. This research explored this place – called ‘En Four’ by some – and described visits and conversations had at the site in 2024. The first part of the research narrated the encounters and recorded the local and anecdotal knowledge shared by pilgrims and visitors. The research then an…

  • Perold de Beer

    Open Access•Arnold M Meiring•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2024

Dr Perold de Beer was a missionary pioneer who contributed as both a church leader and a theologian to the Reformed Church in Africa (RCA). This research recorded his contribution to the RCA as this church navigated political issues during apartheid, multireligious positions and the challenges accompanying church unity; all of these ended up in the Laudium Declaration (LD) which De Beer drafted and was then accepted as the church’s official posit…

  • Rumi whirling in a secular age

    Open Access•Arnold M Meiring•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2021•References: 1

In a secular society, obsessed with materialism and consumerism, the 13th-century mystical teacher and poet, Jalaluddin Rumi (1207–1273), has found a surprisingly widespread following. While his work is often misunderstood and diluted, this research proposed the opposite: that Rumi may broaden his modern admirers’ worldview and bring about an encounter with God. This study thus applied the insights of an 800-year-old mystic to the questions of to…

  • An apocalyptic agenda for mission in our time

    Open Access•Arnold M Meiring•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2020•Cited by: 1

Addressing the interest in missional theology and responding to the recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, this research developed an apocalyptic missional theology for our time. Whilst the Second World War inspired an exploration of the eschatological dimensions of mission, it was argued that apocalyptic theology adds a much needed perspective on mission. In addition to replying to the pandemic, apocalyptic missiology proved to be …

  • Rethinking Missio Dei

    Open Access•Arnold M Meiring•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 1

When Missio Dei is examined from the perspective of Postmodern and African Theologies, new possibilities and metaphors emerge that can contribute to our understanding of God and Church’s mission in the world. Missio Dei, it is shown, should also deal with panentheism, relationships, sacrifice and justice

  • From Christianity to African Religion and back again

    Open Access•Arnold M Meiring•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2005

This article passes from Christianity to African Religion and back again, in order to gain new insight on reconciliation. Traditional Christian reconciliation models are valuable but also contextual and limited; thus new models should be sought. African myths of community, acceptance and rebellion offer alternative ways of understanding reconciliation. When evaluated according to the principles of integration and transcendence, these myths meet t…
