  • Confusing redaction and corruption

    Open Access•James Alfred Loader•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2013

There are two dimensions to the argument offered in this article, both of them pertaining to methodological issues. The first is that of distinguishing textual criticism from redactional criticism, especially with recourse to the critical apparatus of the Stuttgart Hebrew Bibles. Secondly, the danger of over-emphasising the sound distinction between so-called literary and historical exegetical modes into an unsound separation between them. Propos…

Downstream - On Biblical hermeneutics in the context of the recent Anglo-Saxon debateThis paper, delivered at the 2000 meeting of the Rudolf Bultmann Society at Hofgeismar in Germany, offers a survey of recent developments in literary criticism in the English-speaking world. • Johannes Brahms, agnosticism and some other wisdom

    Open Access•James Alfred Loader•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1998

The use made of the biblical text in the cycle Vier ernste Gesange by Johannes Brahms is investigated. The German text of Qohelet, Ben Sira and 1 Corinthians and the impact of their reciprocal relationship as Opus 121 are shown to illustrate the aspect of creativity on the hermeneutical level and a possible meaning of agnosticism on the theological level

  • Die weg van die Here in die woestyn oftewel God se grootpad in die wildernis

    Open Access•James Alfred Loader•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1994

The Lord’s way in the desert or: God’s highway in the Wilderness. On A Story of two Ways This paper contends that the history of the study of the Old Testament in South Africa, written by Professor J. H. le Roux, is a very important work, although flawed in certain respects. It is argued that the author himself reads his texts too ‘immanently', that he paints static portraits of scholars while discarding development, that an either-or picture is …

  • Onqelos Genesis 1 and the Structure of the Hebrew Text

James Alfred Loader•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•1978

ONQELOS GENESIS 1 AND THE STRUCTURE OF THE HEBREW TEXT BY J. A. LOADER Pretoria The Targum Onqelos is often called a literal rendering of the Hebrew text 1). This means that interpretative elements are largely absent in this targum. On the surface such a verdict seems quite natural when Onqelos is placed alongside the Targum Yerushalmi I and Neophyti, where we find extensive midrashic material. But this view has been challenged by John BOWKER 2).…
