  • Perfection in Matthew 5

    Open Access•Albert J Coetsee•ARTICLE•In die Skriflig/In Luce Verbi•2026

This article investigated the apparent unattainable ideal of Matthew 5:48 that the addressees should ‘be perfect ... as your heavenly Father is perfect’. The main hypothesis of the article is that a better understanding of the most likely Old Testament backgrounds to Matthew 5:48, namely Leviticus 19:2 and Deuteronomy 18:13, leads to a more nuanced interpretation of the two occurrences of ‘perfect’ in the verse, and the realisation that the two u…

  • God knows all

    Open Access•Albert J Coetsee•ARTICLE•In die Skriflig/In Luce Verbi•2024

While most scholars view Hebrews 4:12–13 as the author’s own composition which contains various parallels with Old Testament language and thought, very few consider Deuteronomy 29:28 (29:29 ET) as one of the possible conceptual backgrounds of the passage. The current article argued that Hebrews 4:12–13 contains among others a conceptual echo of Deuteronomy 29:28, which when noted, enhances the interpretation of the passage. The article started wi…

  • Warning through song and legislation? An intertextual study of Hebrews 10

    Open Access•Albert J Coetsee•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2024

Just as in the rest of Hebrews, the warning passage in Hebrews 10:26–31 contains numerous references to the Old Testament. The passage has, among others, two explicit quotations from the Song of Moses in Deuteronomy 32 (Dt 32:35a in Heb 10:30a; Dt 32:36a in Heb 10:30b), and one clear allusion to the legislation in Deuteronomy 17 (Dt 17:6 in Heb 10:28). The current article argued that Deuteronomy plays an even bigger role in the passage than has p…

  • Theological perspectives on re-imagining leadership in post-Covid-19 Africa

Open Access•Albert J Coetsee, Christopher Magezi et al.•BOOK•Theological perspectives on…•2023

Post-corona disease 2019 (COVID-19) realities are challenging leaders in all spheres of society in many ways. From the onset of the pandemic, leaders on every level were challenged to provide appropriate guidance in the face of new and adverse realities. From the micro level of local congregations to the macro level of national governments, leaders were required to provide the type of leadership that would not only address immediate obstacles but…

  • Christian hermeneutics in South Africa

Open Access•Nico Vorster, Albert J Coetsee et al.•BOOK•Christian hermeneutics in South…•2022

Hermeneutics remains a divisive and polarizing topic within scholarly and ecclesiastical communities in South Africa. These tensions are not limited to theoretical differences but often crystallize on a grassroots level when local churches and church assemblies have to make important decisions on controversial ethical topics such as ordaining women in church offices, assessing the ethics of gay marriages, and taking a stance on the land debate in…

  • A more comprehensive comprehension and appropriate application

    Open Access•Albert J Coetsee•ARTICLE•In die Skriflig/In Luce Verbi•2021

Closely linked to the phenomenon of the decline in church member numbers in the Western church, is the phenomenon of dwindling their faith commitment. This is the phenomenon in which church members do not show the same vitality and zeal as before and are in danger of abandoning their faith. The current article contributed to the arsenal of studies, aimed at addressing the phenomenon by presenting the solutions deduced from a single biblical book,…

  • By everyone and for everyone

    Open Access•Albert J Coetsee•ARTICLE•In die Skriflig/In Luce Verbi•2021

In Deuteronomy 16:18–20, Moses instructs the people of Israel to appoint judges and officials in their various towns upon entering the Promised Land. Strikingly, not much is said about the qualifications of these judges and officials, or the method of their appointment. Rather, the passage is devoted to what these judges and officials were, and were not to do, and also what the community’s share in justice was to be. Despite the emphasis in the p…

  • Life in transit

    Open Access•Albert J Coetsee, Christopher Magezi et al.•BOOK•Life in transit•2021•References: 30

Migration is an issue that is under discussion worldwide and affects South Africa, the United States of America and Germany in a distinctive way. This book reflects academically on this significant and topical subject of migration from the often neglected perspective of the fields of theology and Christian ethics. While the majority of contributions are from the South African context, there are also chapters reflecting on the topic from the other…

  • The book of Hebrews and the Reformed view of Scripture

    Open Access•Albert J Coetsee•ARTICLE•In die Skriflig/In Luce Verbi•2020

This article argues that the view of Scripture found in the book of Hebrews is echoed in Belgic Confession (BC) Articles 2–7. The article endeavours to prove this hypothesis by indicating how Hebrews and BC Article 2–7 overlap. Articles 2–7 of the BC are discussed successively by summarising what each article says, investigating the conviction of the writer of Hebrews concerning the specific topic and comparing the two. The article finds that the…

  • Hebrews 12

    Open Access•Albert J Coetsee•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2020

In this article, the background of the phrase ‘and live’ in Hebrews 12:9 is investigated. Although most scholars are silent on the matter, the majority of those who venture to propose a possible background vaguely refer to Proverbs 6:23b. Only a handful of scholars propose other backgrounds. This article aims to fill this lacuna. The first part of the article gives an overview of the argument of Hebrews 12:9 in its context to determine a baseline…
